121339 2003-02-14 23:35:00 I have recently acquired a second phone line and a near silent P133 latop, and wish to have the laptop constantly on the internet, sharing files on a P2P program, but also want to share the internet connection with two other PC's (AMD Athlon 1ghz/Win2k, AMD K6-2 266mhz/Win98). The problem is that the laptop is only running Win95 and doesn't have ICS, an OS upgrade is out of the question and the laptop really needs to be the host as it doesn't keep me awake at night. Does anyone know of software that allows me to share the internet connection in a similar way to windows ICS. I mean without the need to install and configure software on the client PC's, as one is a family PC and needs to stay very very simple. I have found previously with other software that after the host or client restarts the internet isn't avaliable.

Any ideas appreciated, thanks in advance

121340 2003-02-14 23:41:00 there are free vers of wingate and sygate that may do what you want (the free vers usually are missing a lot of the features). there is a prog called "remote dissconnection utility" which will aloow the clients to disconnect and coneect the net conection. tweak'e (174)
121341 2003-02-14 23:56:00 I've tryed both Wingate and Sygate, both are problematic, due to my sister constantly restarting her system, and in most cases this means the server has to restart. i use the "remote disconnection utility" when using Windows ICS, I think this is a great program but windows 95 doesnt have ICS. I was hoping someone new of a simple program that would share the connection in the same way Windows ICS does e.g all u need to do is tell IE to automatically detect settings. Pete O'Neil (250)
121342 2003-02-15 00:12:00 ideally you need the 2k pc as the host and use ics.

we had problems with sygate and wingate which is why i stuck with ICS. the oter way is a proxy but it means you have to setup every program to use :(.

not to sure on how to solve this one. mayby you should look at finding why the host pc needs rebooting every time the client pc is rebooted.

btw normally i have "automatically detect settings" turned off in IE.

121343 2003-02-15 00:52:00 yeah i've got the 2k box running ICS at the mo, its so simple but its also so loud, being an athlon and all. Maybe i'll stick 98SE on the K6-2 and and use ICS on that...just have to make sure my sister does %@#$ it up. Pete O'Neil (250)
