121315 2003-02-14 21:22:00 How often do we defrag?Must say do like a tidy compu. Thomas (1820)
121316 2003-02-14 21:42:00 It depends on how you use your computer Thomas, the more files you create and delete, the more frequently you should defrag. Real active users might choose to defrag once a week or even more frequently, while once a month might be enough for others.

Whatever frequency you choose, do run scan disk first as this can save you losing files and don't forget to delete your accumulated temporary internet files. (Open IE Explorer & go to Tools/IE Options/Common, and do choose the option to "delete all off-line content store locally") There is no point is wasting time defragging temporary files.

See the defrag FAQ for more helpful info.

121317 2003-02-14 22:05:00 i don't quite agree with deleteing temp internet files solely to speed up defrag. deleteing them will mean other data will be placed in its place on the disk so when you go on the net again (which will be slower due to no cache) your drive will become fragmented by the temperory internet files. i suggest leaving the temp internet files there. tweak'e (174)
121318 2003-02-14 23:32:00 I was always under the impression that it was best to delete temp internet files, as they were no longer used by windows dot_com (558)

no. you are thinking of windows temp files which you can safely delete (unless some badly written program needs them).

temp internet files are used by Internet Explorer to help speed up 'downloading' web pages. different browser have their cache under different names but they basicly do the same job.

121320 2003-02-15 01:28:00 Just adding to tweak'e, the size of the temp internet files folder is set under Tools- Internet Options (often far too big by default), but once that size is reached then they start getting overwritten, so there is no point in deleting them really, except to hide where you've been :) Terry Porritt (14)
121321 2003-02-15 03:36:00 Fair comment guys, but although the file size is limited, AFAIK its location on the drive is not defined so as it grows it takes up whatever space is available ,which in turn adds to fragmentation .

Hiding where I have been is not an issue for me but ensuring the my permanent data is recorded on a tidy drive is, so I guess it's horses for courses . I also find that the speed-up in defrag time is worth the small effort involved .

121322 2003-02-15 03:45:00 Hi Billy, there is an option to move the temp internet folder elsewhere from the default C: drive, frinstance, you could put it in its own partition, or even another physical drive, like moving a swap file elsewhere to minimise fragmenting. Terry Porritt (14)
121323 2003-02-15 03:56:00 i'm not sure if the few seconds it will save would be worth bothing about. +/- 40meg or so is nothing. tweak'e (174)
121324 2003-02-15 04:02:00 Good idea Terry, I'll move it:D

Cheers

PS tweak'e, I do a lot of research on the net and deleting takes several minutes. There is a lot more than 40MB there I think.
