121864 2003-02-17 03:12:00 A friend of mine from overseas is wanting to install the Zonelab firewall programme on his laptop. He has been informed however that the Free Version is not recommended to be installed on laptops only on a desktop. Is this correct advice? What difference would it make whether he is installing it on one type of PC or the other.? Or is he being sucked in to install the Pay Version? I would be interested in a comment from a kiwi Forum so I can e-mail him back in the UK with some good solid advice. Thanks willbry willbry (1555)
121865 2003-02-17 03:39:00 Maybe there is a reason but I use ZoneAlarm (pay version) on my laptop without any problems, cannot see why the free version would be any different. Gordon. (2217)
121866 2003-02-17 03:49:00 If you go to ZoneAlarm (www.zonelabs.com) (ZoneLabs) and do the "what version do I need" quiz, you get this (www.zonelabs.com) result if you select laptop. They still allow you to download the free version, but recommend the paid version for whatever reason. Jen C (20)
121867 2003-02-17 06:53:00 Thanks Gordon and Jen for your replies. I think at least he can download the free version to his laptop without any serious consequences and see if it works. As you say, the quiz doesn't give any reason why the free version is not recommended for laptops. Cheers

121868 2003-02-17 07:13:00 look in the "help" bit in the quis. they recommend pro due to laptops connecting to different lans and the pro ver has a "auto configuration".

however i would still try the free ver. also they are other quite good free firewalls around.

121869 2003-02-17 07:33:00 tweak'e makes sense there but if the laptop is only being used as a stand alone it shouldn't matter. mikebartnz (21)

121871 2003-02-17 09:59:00 Hello,

I would like to suggest the following URL:
http://www.firewallguide.com/

I believe the concept of firewalls or anything of that matter can be as elaborate as unit or units make it and my definition is that perhaps it may be a bit to complex for one of these text messages alone which is why i have included a URL.

I would assume that no one resource contains all the information which is out there although this may be a good starting point.

It would indeed be interesting to test firewalls myself but i dont think financially it is viable for me to invest time into decent research of the project, my definition of decent being a period of several weeks to months.

121873 2003-02-18 04:37:00 Thanks so much to tweak'e, mikebartnz and Captive as well for your very helpful responses. I have pasted them all into a folder and emailed the attachment to my friend who will be very grateful, I'm sure.
Cheers willbry
