121744 2003-02-16 17:17:00 my pc hard drive shows it to be only 1.98gb in size. I know that its much bigger than this although i cant remember what exactly. I think its something to do with the cmos settings. As i recently formatted drive c: and had trouble re-installing windows i cleared the cmos settings and since then the hard drives showing less than it should.any ideas how i can get all the memory back to my hard drive or whats causing this???many thanks style42uk (3184)
121745 2003-02-16 17:26:00 A Couple of questions.

What are the specs of your computer - Ie What OS, age and speed of computer? What is the brand of the HD. If you dont know off hand open up the case and look, also check the model out.

The possible problem may be that you need update your BIOS to read the whole drive or you may need to put a piece of software onto the HD before installing the OS. This software tells the computer how to read the larger disk capacity.

121747 2003-02-16 19:16:00 OK when in the bios and your looking at your harddrive parameters you will see that on the far right it will either say "auto" "LBA" "Small" or the likes. You will need to set this to either "LBA" or "Auto" if it's already on auto then change it to LBA
This will enable large disk support. Now if your drive is infact 40Gigs, it might be that you will only ever see 32G, this is because your bios is old, there are various work arounds for it though

121748 2003-02-16 19:37:00 Don't format using DOS 6x Merlin (503)
121749 2003-02-17 01:33:00 if i'm looking in the right place i haven,t got LBA ive got auto, user and not installed its set on auto at the moment.
i'm looking in the standard cmos setup is this the right place?
Any more thoughts?

121750 2003-02-17 02:04:00 Ok your in the right place, but your looking at the left hand side of the screen, on the right hand side should be another option that you can change. all the stuff in the middle (sectors/tracks etc) will not be changeable when in "Auto" mode but the last column you should be able to change, this is where you can enable LBA. If you don't have that then unfortunately your bios is too hold to support bigger disks. roofus (483)
121751 2003-02-17 02:26:00 i've found it. It has LBA at the top and you can turn it off or on. i've turned it on but it still makes no difference.
Any other ideas?

121752 2003-02-17 02:29:00 OK so thats cleared.
Now we need to know the actual size of the drive. This should be reported in same place as you have been looking (BIOS)
To the right of the "auto/user" option you should see the size, what is reported there?

121753 2003-02-17 02:34:00 OK, so i'm guessing your running win95?
You need to format your drives using FAT32 instead of FAT16. Within windows95 there is a prog to partion drives using FAT32. i think its under accessories--> system tools
This will result in you loosing all information on the drive so use with caution,.
It will probably result in you having to reinstall windows also.
