121725 2003-02-16 10:28:00 Bought the kids a new comp with XP on it.
Set up an Admin a/c for myself.
Set up user a/cs for each user (kids)
Safest way I thought.
Bought the kids Age of Mythology.
Installed Age of Mythology only to find out that only the Administrator can use the useless bl....dy thing.
Can't believe that the latest OS from the worlds largest OS manufacturer, who advertise flat out, the benefits XP has for security & multiple users produce a new game that an ordinary user can't use.
What a bunch of t....ers!!!

I'm sure there must be a way round this or a fix of some sort.
I've spent a wee bit of time searching the net looking for a workaround but can't find one.
Went to MSofts site, waste of time(what a hopeless site to navigate around)

Can anybody help me please?

Install and configure your games under the Administrator account.
If (or as) necessary copy the appropriate desktop/menu shortcuts to the All Users start menu and/or All users desktop.
You will find these when in Windows Explorer under %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Documents and Settings\All Users where %SystemDrive% is your system disk ( often C: ).

You can add your users to the Power Users group (Standard Users in XP H.E.),
(which is a couple of steps lower than Administrators and a few steps higher than Users) to enable them to run the game.
To do this logon as an Administrator and click START | RUN
In the Run box type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 and click OK or press the Enter key

When the User Accounts windows comes up double-click on the user you wish to modify
In the "User Properties" window click on the Group membership tab
In the properties window (group membership) window click the Standard user (Power Users Group) radio button and click OK...
Repeat for each user to be modified.

Hope this is useful...
Cheers, Babe.

121728 2003-02-16 19:39:00 I never had a problem with AOM on XP, but I only use an account that is an administrator.

I have to say I can understand why only administrator class users should be allowed to install software, but you would think power users could.

121729 2003-02-16 21:44:00 Hi Babe
I've followed your instructions to the letter but in my user accounts there is no option to select "user properties" or "group membership"
Do I have to create a domain to get these properties?
Cheers

121730 2003-02-16 21:50:00 The only options available to me as admin are changing the a/cs to limited or administrator Stumped Badly (348)
121731 2003-02-16 22:00:00 Stumped Badly,

Hmmm, you did use the "control userpasswords2" format as I outlined in my earlier post?

I just tested this on a Windows XP home Edition system and it works correctly as my post. You get the choice of "Standard user", "Restricted user" and a drop-down box for "Other" (which may have account type like Administrators, Guests, Users, HelpServicesGroup... etc)

Please post back on how you got to your users accounts setup, and I'll see where I may be of help.

Cheers, Babe.

121732 2003-02-16 22:01:00 Stumped Badly, Just a quick further point did you actually have Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional?

Cheers, Babe,

121734 2003-02-16 23:27:00 Stumped Badly ,

Ah well in that case it's even easier (famous last words . . . in some respects) .

If you are using the NTFS file system then follow (A), if you are using the FAT32 file system then I'll have to look that one up and (hopefully) get back to you .

(A) NTFS
Click on START right click on My Computer and select MANAGE

If My Computer is not on your Start menu then add it through - right click on the START button and select PROPERTIES, click on Customize, select the Advanced tab in the dropdown box select My Computer - Display as a Link . Then OK your way out of there .

Ok . . . now having selected the MANAGE option from My Computer you will be in the Computer Management window . One of the options on the left hand pane is System Tools click on the plus (+) sign to expand this and other options will be shown . Click on the plus (+) sign to expand the Local users and Groups .

Now EITHER click on the USERS in the left hand pane - goto (1) below or click on the GROUPS in the left hand pane and go to (2) below .

(1) Click on the Users in the right hand pane will be your list of users currently on your computer . Next doubleclick on a user you wish to modify and select the Memeber Of tab . next click on the Add button and in the Select groups windows click on the Adavnced button . Next click on the Find Now button in the select groups window . Select the group you wish the user to be added to (the Power Users group) . Now OK your way out of there . repeat for each user .

(2) Click on the Groups and in the right hand pane will be a list of all the groups currently on your computer . Next Double-click on the Power Users group and use the ADD button to select other users to add to this group . When you click on the add button another window opens up (tired yet?) next click on the ADVANCED button to open the Select users window and within that window click the Find Now button to get a list of users you can select to be added to the group . Holding the CTRL key while clicking on each user name to add you can select the range of users to be added to the group . Now OK your way out of there .

Finally which ever way you have done this then exit from the Computer management application .

And there you have it . . . adding users to groups or groups to users . . .

Phew I hope this all helps . . . :-)

Cheers, Babe .
