2003-02-16 21:50:00 | So what programme are you using to backup with? | Merlin (503) | |
2003-02-16 23:18:00 | roofus, The DEFAULT location of "My Documents" is C:\My Documents I'm on my better halfs machine at the moment, her OS is ME, and just about everything on this set up is the standard default way. I checked the location by right clicking the "my docs" icon and checking "properties" The Actual location can be checked in this way too, as on some systems it is moved. On my own system, i have it in D:\My docs and others have it in the most bizarre locations for what ever reasons. Of course this does little to explain why only some folders moved to the back up location. .Clueless

2003-02-16 23:21:00 | Danger, Did you move the folder, or did you open the folder and select all the contents, and then move them? I'm clutching at straws, but if you did the latter, and hidden files are not shown, they would not have been selelcted, and would not have moved. How EXACTLY did you move the my docs folder to the back up location? .Clueless

2003-02-17 04:01:00 | Thanks for your replys. I have My Documents on a Partition for Data on my P4. I open that partition and Copy My Documents then paste it into a folder on my desktop called Shared Folder. Then I go into my P3 and access the shared folder on my P4 and cut it and paste it into my partition on my P3. I say Yes to All and it usually comes up with a message about not finding a file which is a shortcut to favourite in IE. I have tried Send Too (Right Click) too my shared folder but my shared folder is actually inside My Documents (despite what I said above about it being on my desktop, I guess thats just a short cut) and it says Cannot cop Folder. The Destination is a sub folder of the source folder. So I guess I need to move this Shared Network Folder to somewhere else. Maybe to the same partion but not in My Documents.

2003-02-17 04:37:00 | Ok, have moved the Shared Network Folder from within My Documents and can right click My Documents and Send Too the Shared Network Folder. But still only certain folders are transfering to the new My Documents on the P3. When on my P3 I can open the Shared Network Folder on my P4 and can see all the folders and I have tried right clicking My Documents in the Network Folder and selecting Send to My Documents (on the P3) but still only certain folders appear. (I have removed the IE Favourites Folder from My Documents that was causing problems with not finding some links). The folders that arn't transfering are nothing different from the folders that do transfer, so a bit stumped as to why this is happening. | Danger (287) | |
2003-02-17 05:57:00 | I have this problem as well sometimes. It appears to be caused by a "corrupt" file, file name or something and that prevents the whole lot after that file going over, which is why only a few actually move. That is what you were finding with the Favorites folder -- one or more of the shortcut links was "bad" somehow. Since you have taken the Favorites folder out of the folder you want to move it looks like there is another file doing the same thing. The only way I have been able to suss out which file is the culprit is by moving the folders one by one and narrowing it down until I find it. Very tedious. :-( Maybe someone else can come up with a better method to do the job.

2003-02-17 10:51:00 | Thanks Susan. I have managed to back up all the folders that wouldn't transfer in My Documents by copying and pasting them individually into my Shared Network folder and then dragging them into My Documents on the P3. So still don't really know which folder is causing the problem for future back ups. By the way, months ago when I was having problems backing up via cdrw you mentioned that lots of people were having problems with their Acer CD Writers, you were right. Mine has been replaced under warranty and seems to be working ok, although I don't think its a very high quality one, in fact the manufactorers are so proud of their product they don't even put their name on the box or the writer, but I believe from the coding that its a BCE? or something like that, I have seen them mentioned here before. At least it works, which the Acer never did, and I thought it was me having problems with Nero!

2003-02-17 10:53:00 | Hello, I would suggest 1. Run Scandisk and choose automatically repair errors or to be even more sure of drive integrity do a surface scan as well. If it still fails continue with the following 2. go the command prompt > start > run > command.com [enter] [for WinMe] 3. enter the relevant folder you are having a problem with For 9x With Single users the location of my documents may well be c:\my documents or yes indeed c:\mydocu~1 if viewed in something which does support Vfat Descriptions [VFAT being Fat16 + Long filenames or LFN for short] if multiple profiles are enabled it may be c:\windows\profiles\username\my documents for various versions of NT c:\documents and settings\Username\Username documents\ Note that it can be changed although doing so is perhaps the exception rather than the rule 4. Make a directory called c:\xyz for troubleshooting purposes 5. xcopy *.* c:\xyz /s > c:\progress.txt or perhaps move the data then move it back again, ideally if you do this with something that supports VFAT/LFNs This will duplicate the directory, Please ensure there is sufficient space for a duplicate first. If not contact me and i may be able to think of another way to resolve it 6. start > run > notepad.exe c:\progress.txt Look in the file for any errors which may arise Note that this solution is theory and may need some revision.

2003-02-17 11:00:00 | Whooo... I'll have to look at that again tomorrow, don't want to be up all night, again. Thanks Captive, hope it won't be too technical for me. Ps, scandisk runs every night.

2003-02-17 11:21:00 | Its fixed!!! Thanks all. After checking my Scandisk settings which run overnight I discovered that the box for Automatically fix errors was not ticked. I ran Scandisk manually and then tried deleteing one folder in My Documents which was empty and had been set up for receiving files when roofus had helped me with my network. I tried transfering this folder from my p4 to my p3 and it wouldn't transfer. As it was an empty folder I deleted from My Docs on my P4, deleted My Docs on my P3 and tried transfering My Docs again and all files transfered. So the jigsaw came togeather and with all your help we solved the problem. Thanks again, and thanks for not suggesting "Search Google". :D
