2003-02-18 21:19:00 | On the weekend my boss reinstalled XP Pro on my work machine. I'm not going to rant about how I didn't back up on Friday, because I seethed all yesterday and am now over it. I'm in the processes of reinstalling everything important, and updating XP Pro to fix those security issues. I've just finished loading SP1, and am trying to access windowsupdate.microsoft.com, but keep getting error 0x80072EE2. The troubleshooter tells me that I need to enable HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections, and "add the following urls to your proxy exception list - Windowsupdate.microsoft.com, V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com, Download.Windowsupdate.com". We aren't using a proxy server. What could be the issue? Changing settings, restoring my Advanced internet options to the default etc aren't making a difference. I'm running IE6 SP1 on XP Pro SP1. Thanks

2003-02-18 21:27:00 | Honeylaser, Try the following: In Internet Explorer click TOOLS | Internet Options Click on the Privacy Tab Within the Per Site Privacy Actions put the website address in and click on ALLOW (repeat for each site) Click OK and OK again. Restart (close only) Internet Explorer or try the windows update option again. Babe.

2003-02-18 21:35:00 | Honeylaser, If my previous reply doesn't do the trick try the following: Go to the Windows Update site as you usually do. When you get there, copy the address that appears in the browser's address bar. Click the Tools menu, then click Internet Options. Click on the Security tab. Click on the Trusted Sites icon and then click on the Sites button. In the Trusted Sites dialog box, paste the address into the Add this Web site to the zone text box. Remove the checkmark from the Require server verification ( https: ) for all sites in this zone checkbox. Click the Add button. Click OK. Click OK again. Close the browser and return to the Windows Update site to test. If not you could try the following site Update_troubleshooter (v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com) Babe.

Nope, that one didn't work :( > If not you could try the following site > Update_troubleshooter (v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com) That was my first port of call, where it asked me to change my HTTP 1.1 proxy setting/s (which didn't work). Not much info there aside from that, and I haven't found any info by googling. I'm hoping I don't have to do another format and reinstall of XP... but I'm all out of ideas! |

2003-02-18 22:14:00 | Honeylaser, Sorry in my post > In Internet Explorer click TOOLS | Internet Options > Click on the Privacy Tab > Within the Per Site Privacy Actions put the website address in and click on > ALLOW (repeat for each site) > Click OK and OK again. > > Restart (close only) Internet Explorer or try the windows update option again. I left out the important line... (highlighted below) In Internet Explorer click TOOLS | Internet Options Click on the Privacy Tab Click on the EDIT option under Web Sites... then under Manage Sites Within the Per Site Privacy Actions put the website address in and click on ALLOW (repeat for each site) Click OK and OK again. Restart (close only) Internet Explorer or try the windows update option again. Sorry about the missing bit Cheers, Babe.

2003-02-18 22:37:00 | OK, tried that. I have allowed both the domains microsoft.com and windowsupdate.com, but it still isn't working. Any more ideas?

2003-02-18 22:47:00 | Honeylaser, Hmmmm, What about under Tools | Internet Options Advanced tab Under the HTTP 1.1 settings ticking the option "use HTTP 1.1 through Proxy connections" Babe.

2003-02-18 22:58:00 | That was the first thing I tried... and we don't use a proxy server. Our sysadmin doesn't think that is the problem. | honeylaser (814) | |
2003-02-18 23:08:00 | Honeylaser, Bigger Hmmmm... Just a point have you tried running Windows Update from within the Help and Support Centre?: START | Help and Support. Under Pick a task, click the option "Keep your computer up-to-date with Windows Update" One other point how do you connect to internet (I assume thats all going since you are posting) (I'll be out for a little while will check back in, also see if I have any other pointers for you) Cheers, Babe.
