122211 2003-02-18 09:33:00 Hi,
I have Win ME. I also have a 'Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing' CD. Just the other day when I went to use it after not using it for ages I get an error that says it can't find the file 'Logo.smk' I look in the contents of the CD & see that it is there. I can press the 'Ignore' button a few times & then it tells me that it can't find certain files & when I have searched to see what they are it turns out they are music files that my daughter has downloaded off the Internet using Kazaa Lite, which we did not have when 'Mavis' was working fine. I can eventually manage to get in & do a few practises in fits & starts, by using the 'Ignore' button as well as Ctrl,Alt,Delete.

I have uninstalled the CD & deleted the files off the computer & then reinstalled the CD but still the same thing happens.

What is going wrong? This CD was quite expensive to buy & I would hate to find that it is no longer of any use.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Pauline.

122213 2003-02-18 11:38:00 Hi Pauline,

I have version 10 of Mavis Beacon installed. I don't have to have the CD in the drive to use it as everything runs off the hard drive. What version are you using? I had a look for the logo.smk file and it is resident in the installation on the hard drive. I would have said definitely reinstall it (with the option to put everything on the hard drive if possible) but it sounds as if you have tried that. Did the installation proceed normally and reach the end? Are you sure you don't have a virus at work? Are you having trouble with any other programs?

122214 2003-02-18 11:41:00 BTW, I just remembered I had trouble installing an older version of Mavis Beacon a while back, and the solution was to turn off the antivirus program which was interfering with the Mavis installation. Try turning off your AV program and installating Mavis again. Maybe that might work. Rod J (451)
122215 2003-02-18 21:09:00 Hi Rod J,
I have Mavis Beacon Deluxe version 12.
I do need the CD in the drive to access the lessons because it tells you to put the CD in & there is no option to install everything on the hard drive.
I don't have any viruses.
There is not any installation problems.
I wondered if Kazaa Lite may somehow be interfering with it as it says that it can't find files like Classica.wav & Credit.wav, which is a music file that my daughter downloaded.
Do you know if there is a way that I can check if the CD has somehow got a fault on it?
Thanks
Pauline.

122216 2003-02-19 06:59:00 Hi Pauline

The Mavis Beacon FAQ site (www.riverdeep.net) has suggestions regarding File Not Found: LOGO.SMK errors.

I hope this helps.

I will check that site out. I couldn't find the readme text file that the error referred me to but your reply just might give me what I need to know.

122218 2003-02-19 10:22:00 Hi Pauline,

Try this utility called CDCheck (www.elpros.si). I'm just downloading it myself to try now. I've got a few CD's which are troublesome to read, maybe this will confirm what the problems with them are. BTW, if you think Kazaa Lite might be interfering with Mavis, could you disable (or even perhaps uninstall) it and try Mavis again?

I hope you get to the bottom of your problem soon.

Cheers,
Rod.

122219 2003-02-19 20:23:00 Hi Rod J,
All I needed to do was give the CD a wash in dishliquid & warm water. I never thought that being dirty was the problem as I was always careful to put it back in it's case.
