Depends what you are after... I'm thinking if you post a question like this here you're bound to get 50 different answers!

Personally, I prefer the Compaq Evo model notebooks, as you can't beat them pricewise for the specs you get. If I am offering a machine to Joe User I normally quote those (the 1015v or 1020v models). Aside from those, the IBM Thinkpad range are usually pretty good, and more sturdy so less chance of them being broken beyond repair should they hit concrete.

For cool factor, the Panasonic Toughbook is a great model. Panasonic aren't totally in the notebook space yet, though, and I believe the innards are manufactured by Compaq (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

Honeylaser ... I don't think that any of the "makers" of laptops make laptops. Dell, HP, TI, Compaq, (probably IBM) certainly don't. There are specialist companies which make laptops, to the Name's specifications.

The laptop I would like would weigh 250g, have a 17" screen, a DVD, run for 3 weeks on 2 alkaline pencells, and be capable of withstanding a drop from 3 metres onto a concrete floor. And cost $150 :D

I'll take two of 'em! ;) :O

As an aside, I would probably like the Area 51 (www.alienware.com) laptop... That's a beast of a laptop...

Lo.

We're allowed tp dream. B-)

122159 2003-02-18 02:49:00 Finances aside. I will suggest a IBM Thinkpad, I have had 3 in a row. IBM will be pricey if u need a lot of grunt, entry and standard models arnt that bad vs others. They are also the ones's with the most expandable drive bay and also the better keyboard. They also have a lot of models to suit from the thin X series to the A desktop replacements. Warranty is excellent with 24hr courier replacement of parts thats if its not a big problem. A HDD crash I received in 24hrs, a call at 1AM, received HDD at 10AM at the same day.

I hear Compaq is pricewise and a v bright screen. Dell is also pricewise if u like a grunty machine. I will personally only go for the larger names minus Acer. Replacing parts is not as simple as the desktops given so much stuff is built into the mainboard.

I'll second that. 51 points for style factor. The MJ-12 DDR (www.alienware.com) is pretty funky too. But then you could just buy the case from Procase and use a can of spray paint to get the same effect.
