122137 2003-02-17 23:55:00 Those of you who replied to my queries about a possible virus last may be interested to know that the problem has turned out to be a failed hard drive - 6 weeks from new . This was a 60 Gb Maxtor (?7200 whats its!) .

Has anyone had problems with this brand of hard drive before?

The guys tell me this is probably just 'one of those things' . However, this was the second one I purchased after Xmas, the first one the computer couldn' find .

Thanks for any comments - life is indeed frustrating without my trusty (?) computer at home .

122138 2003-02-18 02:16:00 Maxtor drives generally ok... well, the newer ATA133 ones are good anyway... have had a 40gb one for about 2 years now, and never had a problem with it... was planning on getting another 2 X 80 gb Maxtors myself...

122139 2003-02-18 02:18:00 I purchased a 60Gb Maxtor Fireball as a second drive for DV. It's OK after 15-months, so far...

Your failure shows the importance of Back-ups tho. Hope you didn't loose too much.

122140 2003-02-18 02:34:00 It's probably one of those things. Failures for most electronic things fit a bathtub curve: A very short period with failures, then a long period with no faults, then a gradually increasing rate after that long time.

Yours was in the "infant mortality" category.

122141 2003-02-18 03:24:00 No - if all else fails, there is the old hard drive, current up till Xmas time, sitting in the back bedroom. I tend to be a bit of a squirrel as far as computer bits/pieces are concerned. I must take up my 'big son's' offer of building (at some stage) a back-up computer from what is there!! R.M. (561)
122142 2003-02-18 04:04:00 Hi R . M .

I've had a Maxtor hard drive for 2 years now, it's running sweetly with no problems . I did have a Seagate Barracuda, but after having 3 fail in rapid succession, I have gone back to the Maxtor brand .

Having a hard drive suddenly fail on you is no fun, especially when it is still new . You mention that you also have the old hard drive, so why don't you install that into your current PC as a slave and backup all your data onto that as protection against further incidents?

I invested in Nortons Ghost and now store a current image on my second drive so that if a drive is lost, or if windows spits the dummy in a big way, it is only a matter of 20 minutes to restore my PC back to a fully working version again .
