122050 2003-02-17 21:15:00 I'm on a 56k dialup modem, using winXP.

Anytime I connect to the net, the modem makes a continuous screeching sound and this sound continues until I disconnect from the internet.

I have tried everything from turning the modem sound off in 'modem properties' and tried putting "atm0" in the proper place, and turning sound off completely. I think that the sound is coming from the internal speakers or something?

The only solution I have had to stop the noise, is to put a half busted set of headphones into the modem itself (like a headphone jackpoint). This sort of eliminates the sound, but it doesn't turn it off completely. This can't be good for my computer to have that noise on all the time.

Does anyone know how to stop it?

122051 2003-02-17 21:35:00 sticky tape/foam over the top of the speaker on the modem :D crude but works ok, a bit better than cutting the speaker off the modem. tweak'e (174)

You don't mention which modem specifically but if you follow the above link to a earlier post on F1 I provided a link and maybe others as well to a driver site that had a update or something for a noisey modem problem in XP.

122053 2003-02-17 22:44:00 It is a conexant 56k internal modem. I think its the HSF type? not sure though. PoWa (203)
122054 2003-02-17 23:07:00 Well if all else fails, why not buy a headphone sized jack plug and just shut the speacker of in the same way you use to shut it of with your half dead headphones!

122055 2003-02-18 02:29:00 The only way the noise can damage your computer is indirectly: a furious user might take to it with a hammer. :D

A big blob of Bluetak works quite well to supress a piezo speaker. But the AT string ought to fix it.

122056 2003-02-18 03:03:00 I had this modem once, the solution is to update the driver, XP has a driver that works with this modem.
right click the modem in device manager .
select - install from list - don't search etc - select modem - Generic -
