122020 2003-02-17 13:17:00 Hello,

This is my first day here so perhaps I missed something but as far as I can see so far there is not filter for questions which have no solution.

If this proves to be true is it possible the problems without solutions can have their own filter so as to provide the people who are trying to help a decent filter which will increase their time effeciency in doing so.

122021 2003-02-17 17:53:00 what???

do you mean that if the system had a filter that killed off the questions with no answers given after a few days (because there is no answer posiable) then those of us trying to help people could avoid reading all the questions that had no answer and as such are pointless?

if that is what you are getting at then i would be against such a system because some times it can take sevral days or even weeks far a question to get an answer just because the person who knows the answer has not come along.

it is still before I wake up so did any thing I just wrote make any sence??

122022 2003-02-17 18:46:00 I read it a bit differently (admittedly I did read it about 4 times). I think that the filter would assist those trying to help. Maybe the word *filter* is incorrect as that implies 'to remove' maybe in this post it is implied 'to capture' therefore those who are trying to help can identify those questions not yet answered a lot quicker.

If I'm talking out the wrong end then sorry. ;)

122023 2003-02-17 20:17:00 You have done well on your first day Captive.
If you mean a filter to bring up unanswered posts I would agree it would be usefull as they can dissappear quite quickly sometimes.

122024 2003-02-17 20:38:00 Usual story here..
The staff at IDG are a little on the busy side, apparantly they have some kind of computer network thingy to look after, and this can take alot of time.

Apart from the issues of whose going to manually rate each post "unanswered" and whose going to write the script for the rating icons, this is a good idea.

Personally i just read whatever i think i might learn from, and what ever i might be able to contribute to. I can see however that for some, such a rating would be useful.

122025 2003-02-17 21:19:00 I think that the Pf1 web dev team are already busy enough.

Although something like that may have its ups, there are probably some downs to it as well.

I think Clueless summed it up quite well.

I judge weather I think I can help by the subject line, so if the subject says:
PHP script help needed
Then I just dont bother going there.

If it says:
Want help with DVD software
then I might have a look.

I think rather than a thread filter, if people give better descriptions in the subject, that'll work better, as people can see if a thread has been answered or not!

My 2c worth anyways...

Cheers

There is no need to do it manually as already there is the number of replies to a post and if it reads 0 then it gets pulled in on the query. Admittedly it would not guarrantee a question has actually been answered but it could be usefull.

122027 2003-02-17 22:03:00 I was thinking of a filter which lets people choose if it has been answered or not when searching, not elimate it from the database.

Some Message boards allow the person who generated the question to close if it they are happy with the answer which relates to who is to determine if it has been answered

FIlter seems an applicable term just as a database filter so to speak although perhaps i should have been more detailed in the description perhaps

as for the complexity to implement this i wouldnt envisage a very long job from what coding i have done as its not much more code than already exists.

122028 2003-02-17 22:18:00 Perhaps a button below the search box "List all questions to which there have been no answers" and a query on the database - "if replies = 0 then list here" Heather P (163)
122029 2003-02-17 22:38:00 Pretty much what I was thinking Heather but rather if solution=0 which is different again. You could have a reply otherwise that was not a solution which may confuse things even more. Captive (3159)
