121998 2003-02-17 09:44:00 Hi...While trying to copy a CD with Adaptec CD Copier (first copying to the hard drive) Adaptec goes through the "Disk Image- Reading Blocks" step then says "An error occurred reading from the CD-Rom drive. Please check drive connections and check for correct disk."
the Adaptec Diagnostic Tests return no answers to Drive...Write Path...Write Speed tests. and the Disk Info page says Type Unsupported and leaves the rest of the page greyed out. There are no problems in reading and writing to and from the hard drive with my HP CD -RW.
The CD-Rom drive is a new Diamond Data (Mitsubishi) recently installed. It works fine with music CDs and program discs. Thanks for any suggestions or comments. Cheers...Ken.

121999 2003-02-17 09:51:00 What kind of CD are you trying to back up? Is it a game CD or just normal data? Have you tried using your writer as the reader as well or not?

Lo.

122000 2003-02-17 10:08:00 CD copying is often a subject people get caught out with, probably because there are so many variables like blank CD quality & compatibality with your burner, firmware, burning software, OS support, the overall health of your system and the way your devices are connected inside or to your PC. Having tried many ways to write, copy or compile CD's I have found the safest by far when copying a CD is to use the same drive to both read & write the CD. This way always takes longer, but because you are working with an image of the disk you are copying, temporarily stored on your hard disk, there are less things that can go wrong.

Often, new cd-rom drives with great looking specs can be a lemon. I have had brand new drives unable to read some pressed CD's and under no circumstances able to read burnt cd's. When I tried a replacement, the same faults repeated, on more than 3 different machines bringing me to the conclusion that brand and particular model was as useless as a dead battery. It might be prudent to try another brand of CD-Reader if that's the only variable since before you started having problems.

Before you do anything else, check both of your optical drives in device manager to find out the firmware revision, then the manufacturers website for a firmware upgrade if available. Firmware is basically software that controls the laser engine & interacts between the drive and your computers IDE interface, similar to a BIOS.

You have not stated your OS, so I am giving you info concerning hardware only.

122001 2003-02-17 10:43:00 Thanks for those replies...sorry I forgot to add... Win98 OS. I'll try reading and writing with the burner tomorrow and get back with the result....Ken paradox (1082)
122002 2003-02-18 07:04:00 Hi...I was trying to backup a data disk...then tried a music disk but they both did the same thing. I'll check out the firmware next.

Today I started a backup doing the read and write with the writer. I got the very same error message as mentioned in my first post, even including the reference to the CD-Rom drive, which shouldn't have been involved. This should tell me something, but goes clean over my head.
Could it be a slightly wrong connection during the recent CD-Rom replacement? Hope this is some help in spotting the fault. Cheers..Ken.

122003 2003-02-18 09:14:00 check to see if DMA is enabled and if not, enable it.
This can be found in the properties of your cd-rom in device manager.
Then see if the errors still occur.

122004 2003-02-18 09:26:00 Try backing up the data disk by creating an image of the disk first manually . Adaptec has an option to make an image of a disk, you'll find it on one of side arrows (upside down triangle) alongside the large menu buttons . Look for the menu item along the lines of "create image" & give it a whirl .

Concerning the way you connected the 2nd drive, if there was any faults in the connection, you'd probably find all drives connected to that IDE port would be either not functioning at all or causing your PC to fail at boot, so given your PC is functioning, I'd say that's probably not the main issue right now .

Have you searched through the knowlege base at Roxios website for issues concerning the faults you are experiencing? Manufacturer knows best and you may find the answers to your problems there . The 2 fixes below are related to your OS in terms of housekeeping & maintenance . There's no guarantee they will work for your particular problem, but if nothing else, you will have given your installation a tidy up . Sometimes, that's all that is needed .

Before you try making an image, I would suggest you defragment your hard disk . If you havent defragged your HDD for some time now, I'd suggest starting it before you go to bed & letting it run its course overnight . If you regularly defrag, then it will take less time than if you hardly or never defrag . If you have never run defrag, then I'd suggest you start in safe mode & run it from there to avoid loading all your startup group items into active memory . If Defrag gets interrupted more than 10 times, it stops with an alert . Safe mode uses less memory and normally doesn't interrupt the defrag process . If nothing else, a defrag will give your HDD a tidy up .

If after defragging, you still have problems, then have a look at Roxios website for a free update to Adaptec . If you're already running the latest version, try uninstalling it, restarting & re-installing it, or better still try Nero if you can find a retail version . OEM versions of Nero & the files available fron their website may not work on your CD-Burner, though I know of a work around that allows Nero to work as a full version, at least on later model burners, never tried it on models under 32X .

Now, finally, here's something you can do if nothing else works . It's un-related, though once again, it's a tidy up, this time of your registry . I have seen this make a previously infuriatingly buggy win98 pc usable again .

Back up your registry before you start .
Restart your PC into a DOS prompt . Type in CD COMMAND <press return> Now type in SCANREG /FIX <press return> After 3-5 minutes, depending on the sped of your computer, your command prompt will return . You can either shut down & do a cold boot from here or just type in EXIT or WIN and <press return> Windows will restart . Try Adaptec again .

If this doesn't help, you may need to get a local technician to come to your aid .

122005 2003-02-18 10:10:00 Thanks again for the suggestions. I'll get back and let you know how it goes.. Thursday night probably....I'm out of town tomorrow. Cheers..Ken. paradox (1082)
122006 2003-02-20 21:03:00 roofus...
I can find no option to enable DMA in Device Mgr/cd-rom/settings, but took a look in CMOS setup in ROM PCI/ISA Bios/integrated peripherals.
Primary Master UDMA Auto
Primary Save UDMA Auto
Secondary Master UDMA Auto
Secondary Slave UDMA Auto

Later...Just read a post from last night which mentions UDMA Auto. Are my settings OK?

mikep...
Just done a defrag which went OK.
It will take me a while to go through the suggestions you have made. I'm even having trouble finding out which version of Adaptec I've got. I'll work through the suggestions you made and ask some questions at Roxio and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again folks...Ken

122007 2003-02-20 22:19:00 DMA can be enabled in the bios but windows wont use it unless you tell it to (in win9x its disabled by default, in winxp its enabled by default)
I think you should go back into device manager and look again, there will be an option to enable DMA on your CD-rom.
My suggestion isn't necessarily going to solve your problem, but then again it might also.
