122256 2003-02-18 23:43:00 Honeylaser, I'm puzzled... (a very big hmmmmmm)

The error you get "0x80072EE2" translates to 'The connection to this Internet site took
longer than the allotted time' which still seems to point to a network or proxy issue and a MS KB article explains
this to some extent Windows Update May Not Work in Windows XP If an Authenticating Web Proxy Is Used (support.microsoft.com).

I've assumed that the Internet Explorer security is set to medium or lower, and active scripting and download and initialisation of ActiveX controls is enabled.

I've also assumed no Group Policy is in effect to 'disable' Windows Update.
For example under gpedit.msc; User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update. In the right hand pane, check that "Remove access to all Windows Update Features" is set Not Configured or disabled. (If you can at least start the Windows Update option then this is already ok)

I'll check back in later on to see where you are at.

Cheers, (puzzled)Babe.

I have it set at a custom level. Active scripting/download are both enabled. ActiveX are all either enabled or prompt (if unsigned).

All well and good. There are no group policies in place, and I also have full admin powers on this machine.

I'm utterly confuddled. I brought one of the techs here into this whole thing, and she has recommended uninstalling IE 6 SP1 and installing IE 5.5 SP2 to see if that sorts it. As I said, the proxy thing can be discounted.

We are running ADSL with a Netscreen 5XP Unlimited firewall (which isn't the problem, as I'm pretty sure all the other machines here have no problem running Windows update.

I'm going to try the IE 5.5 thing now and see how we go. If that fails, I'm thinking my only other option may be to reinstall XPP again (oh, bother).

122258 2003-02-19 01:53:00 Going back to IE 5.5 SP2 did not work.
Logging in as Administrator and trying windowsupdate.microsoft.com did not work.
Is there some sort of ancient voodoo ritual I can try?

122259 2003-02-19 03:20:00 Restarting in Safe Mode and trying did not work.
Confirmed that other PC's here can still use windowsupdate.microsoft.com with no problems.

Did your boss move the troll? Or the rubber chicken?

That'll do the trick!

Don't know. I suppose I should ask him if he followed the correct procedure and turned around anti-clockwise three and a half times while whistling "Sweet Child O Mine" while the install was being done. I'm pretty sure he wasn't crossing his eyes and poking his tongue out while inserting the XP CD either. There's our problem!

122262 2005-11-13 07:04:00 Silly question: why did you load SP1 as opposed to SP2 for Windows XP? I think you might not have this issue at all if you were using the second service pack.

Would recommend attempting to install SP2 from a disk copy - you can use someone else's system to download a copy from the update site if it won't let you download it directly.

SP2 was not out then.

And I doubt that the original poster is still waiting from February 2003 for an answer.
