122597 2003-02-20 07:46:00 At work we have 4 PC's a printer and DSL router connected through a switch. We are going to install some new business software. My original plan was to buy a new pc and set that up as the software server, and have it available for occasional use for other things - mostly Office apps.

A change in things has meant that the new PC would get more use than originally planned, so I thought about speccing it up a bit more to try and make sure performance does not suffer too much. The business software will not be subject to heavy use. I was thinking of a P4 2.4 or so with 512 ram. I then thought a separate HD for shared files might help - with the 1st HD being used by the user of the PC.

I don't really want to have to buy 2 PC's or get a domain server. Any suggestions?

122598 2003-02-21 02:23:00 Using separate HDDs will help . If possible, get the fastest possible Hard drive (and IDE controller) you can afford - ATA133 7200rpm . If the PC will only be used for Office apps on top of the business software, there shouldn't be too much of an issue .

I've honestly never tried a setup like this, so I can't tell you if it actually works well .

An alternative would be to buy 2 lower spec computers .
Get a cheap (or onboard) graphics card for the server . Don't get a monitor for the server .
When you need to access the server, you can just plug in a monitor and keyboard etc . (Or use something like PC Anywhere) .

122599 2003-02-21 02:35:00 The shared drive will work better if it is placed on the second IDE as a secondary primary. That way it doesn't need to use the same IDE as the primary hard drive and will give better transfer rates. Gorela (901)

122601 2003-02-23 02:29:00 If its constantly running the business software, then go 512MB RAM, but any PC that's over the sorta 1.3Ghz mark would do fine. If its not doing that and is more of a net gateway/file server, then I run a P266 that does more than fine, its not noticable....

Seperate HDD's - All the way. If its file-serving then its not gonna have to be a 7200rpm drive, but faster would help for data transfer rates obviously!

I have a shared drive for music as opposed to having it on the primary HDD.. Now I can be gamin and not notice when they start playing my music upstairs!
