122562 2003-02-20 05:06:00 For some reason my monitor is getting a blueish tinge which starts white at one side and gradually gets bluer across the screen. Banners, pictures and some text does interrupt this blue-ing which then makes it look streaky. I've used the monitors degauss function but it makes no difference.

The monitor is about a fist width away from my stereo (where it's always been) and not near any speakers. The only thing that's changed (apart from the weather) is I've installed a DVD driver. But that shouldn't have made any difference, should it?

122563 2003-02-20 05:37:00 No it shouldn't.

Try rotating the monitor 90 degrees and degaussing again to see if this makes any difference (better or worse). If it is a uniform tint then it could be a faulty clamp circuit in the monitor but that would be a rare and unusual event on a modern screen.

Sight unseen it sounds initially like a purity type of issue but the streaky efect points more to a loss of high frequency response in the video amplifiers.

How old is the monitor and what size is the screen? It could be terminal I'm afraid as repair cost might be prohibitive.

122564 2003-02-21 01:56:00 Just had another thought, does the effect change if you turn the contrast up or down? If the screen looks better at low contrast and the smearing is worse at high contrast then that points to a CRT/video drive problem.

Try going to this site by E.ric (homepages.paradise.net.nz) and seeing if you get colour flare or fringing on the crosshatch pattern or on the colour bars when you turn the contrast up full.

The other thing to check is how the screen comes up after it has been off for a while. Go to the FAQs and read the focus one (#4) then try some of the tests for an aging CRT. Post results.

122565 2003-02-21 07:24:00 Those 'test patterns" seemed ok . Can't be age as the whole bloody system is only about six months old . I think I'll give the shop I bought it from a call . They may have to swap with a new one .

PS . It's a 17" with contrast set to 100% and brightness 50%

122566 2003-02-21 21:41:00 Hi Cadifan

That contrast setting is possibly too high . Go to the monitor faq's (#3 & #4) and see how to set brightness and contrast correctly . I think I put it in both of them . If the contrast setting turns out to be 100% of ????????? i . e . it is 100% of a preset maximum then you may end up back where you started but in principle, contrast should never be set at max . I have noticed that many cheap TV's default to max too, which makes for an apalling picture and very short CRT life .

Over-riding all of this is the warranty . Have quick fiddle for interests sake, then take it back to the shop for replacement as there is no user adjustable setting that would cause the effect you describe so it is 99% certain to be a fault .

If at all possible, try it on another computer first, and if it is OK on that, take the whole system back for a proper check . Don't be put off by any bullsh** like "they all do that" or "it is the program you are using" etc, I'm sure you know the kind of fluff I mean .

BTW, what make and model is the monitor?

Cheers

Did look at your recommendations but setting the settings lower just made for a darker screen.

I'll have to give the shop a call through the week, thanks for all the response.

122568 2003-02-21 23:09:00 Again, it sounds very much like a dose of the el cheapo budget monitors, at the site below they are advertised at $239 for a 17", so you get what you pay for. Just imagine what the wholesale price will be :(

It's quite likely they will all have grotty pictures, they probably have tubes that reputable manufacturers would reject.

122569 2003-02-21 23:28:00 Well it was bought brand new with an upgrade to a 17" monitor and if the monitor's already at fault (cheapy or not) I'll expect a replacement what ever it costs THEM. cadifan (286)
122570 2003-02-21 23:50:00 Well, I should try and get the best service you can from your supplier, but have a look at the posting below about KTC monitors. Steve Askew had his budget Proview replaced several times and they were all grotty as supplied new, a similar fault to yours having poor white purity and blotchy colours.

The fact is that there is some cheap rubbish being sold and since the monitor is your means of communicating with your computer then it should be as good as you can possibly afford, it's much more important than cpu Mhz or size of hard drive etc.

Anyway good luck.

122571 2003-02-23 08:08:00 Unfortunately cheap knock-offs are around everywhere and is something we all have to be aware of. It's really shitty that people resort to these cheap junk items to make money off honest people.

Thanks for the responses, let's see how it goes from here.
