2003-02-20 03:37:00 | Below is taken straight from GOOGLE A file association is something Windows uses to figure out which program should open a particular file . You can change a file association permanently, or for only one instance . You can change the default file association with these simple steps . Single-click a file . Hold the Shift key while right-clicking the file . Select "Open With . . . " Select a program . Place a check mark next to "Always use this program to open this type of file" if you want to permanently change its file association . Otherwise, this will be a one-time solution . Click OK . You can use these steps to open a file in almost any program as long as the program supports the file extension . MP3s are one example of why you might want to change a default file association . MP3 players battle for file association control and will often change the association without warning you . BUT as usual I am doing something wrong . . . Once I had the ACDSee eye icon but now i have the red flag windows icon which will not open into any thing on my computer . . . when I rightclick I only get OPEN not "open with" so I am doing something elementary wrong . . . but what?

2003-02-20 04:28:00 | Hi olldaddy Where are you viewing the file that you wish to associate? This process normally takes place in windows explorer so I wonder if you are working somewhere else . There is also another mehod for bringing up the open-with option but for the life of me I can't remeber it right now . Maybe this will jog somebody's memory . Cheers Billy 8-{)

I dont want to be pointing out something you already know . . . but I wonder if you missed a point or two in that information you posted? Please dont slap me if I'm wrong - I'm just quite aware that after trying something for a while it's easy to miss one thing and get really frustrated with it! It is necessary to left click the file first, otherwise the 'hidden' menu wont show when you hold shift and right click . Nuff said, good luck! |

2003-02-20 08:16:00 | Hi olldaddy, just thought as you didn't say what o.s you are using, if you are for instance using win 95 the instructions for changing the file assoc. are slightly different again to what Oxie gave (they do work for xp that way). You need to go here: To change which program starts when you open a file 1 In My Computer or Windows Explorer, click the View menu, and then click Options. 2 Click the File Types tab. 3 In the list of file types, click the one you want to change. The settings for that file type are shown in the File Type Details box. 4 Click Edit. 5 In the Actions box, click Open. 6 Click Edit, and then specify the program you want to use to open files that have this extension.

2003-02-20 08:29:00 | Thanks..ZEP .have Windows 98SE...will try your advice......the problem now is knowing which icon i want to change as there are several red flag white background icons but mine came with out any apparent prompting and is on all my photo/picture files............... | olldaddy76 (2539) | |
2003-02-20 08:42:00 | In that case - i am presuming your photos/pictures are jpeg files? If so - when you open up the file types tab - go through the list until you find JPEG Image (don't worry too much about the icons, as you know jpeg will have that icon, but look for the JPEG Image in "Registered File Types" list - then highlight that - then click edit and carry on as per 5 In the Actions box, click Open. 6 Click Edit, and then specify the program you want to use to open files that have this extension. In your case ACDsee. Hope that makes sense?
