122518 2003-02-20 02:02:00 Hey there ppl :) I have a problem with Messenger Service adverts popping up when I'm not even visiting a website. These ads are generally advertising - working from home... how to fix male erection problems (apparently Viagra is the way to go!!! :D)... etc etc etc.

There is no set pattern as to when they pop up either. I run XP Pro.

Has anyone else had these annoying adverts??? And if so please please please tell me how to remove them from my system!!!

Thank you

Nicky

122519 2003-02-20 02:11:00 Sounds like adware (searchwebservices.techtarget.com) or spyware. Try downloading Ad Aware from Lavasoft USA (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) to clean up any programs which could be causing it. honeylaser (814)
122520 2003-02-20 02:13:00 Oh, you might want to try Popup Stopper (http://www.panicware.com/) from Panicware as well. It's pretty useful to stop being bombarded with adverts. honeylaser (814)
122521 2003-02-20 02:17:00 Or you could just look in msn messenger itself and disable the option.
I can't remember what box it is but i did it the other day.

122522 2003-02-20 03:02:00 You're kidding me, right? Thats totally dodgy for a MS product to have AdWare running. Perhaps that's why I'm not using it? honeylaser (814)
122523 2003-02-20 03:14:00 Hey thanks for the prompt replies :D

I have adaware installed on my computer and it hasnt stopped these ads from appearing.

I have also deleted msn messenger from my system also, so ????

I will give popup stopper a go though... see if that helps at all.

I will keep you posted :)

122524 2003-02-20 03:16:00 Firstly it's not MSN messenger.

If you're on a NT based machine (XP,2K, etc) go to the run box or a command prompt and type net send 127.0.0.1 hello and see what happens.

You should get a message pop up showing 'hello'.

My first recommendations is to get a firewall (I use Kerio) as a firewall can block these out. You should run a firewall anyway for security reason. My other recommendation is that you disable the messenger service.

122526 2003-02-20 03:24:00 Super fast delivery of popups - up to 15,000 popups per minute at Twin-Turbo mode (that is 900,000 popups sent per hour and almost 22 Million popups per day!)

GOOD GRIEF!!!! Thats alot of popups... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR X-(

122527 2003-02-20 03:27:00 My other recommendation is that you disable the messenger service???
