122468 2003-02-20 00:27:00 I have installed Mandrake 9 on a Dell Latitude laptop.
I am trying to get a Hayes Optima PCMCIA Modem to work, Mandrake recognises the modem, I know my internet settings are correct, it starts to dial with those normal modem noises but when it goes into the second stage it hangs on one long drawn out squawk until it eventually times out. It gave this trouble when I tried it with Win98 & NT a few months ago (since then it's been sitting in my top draw). I know that Mandrake is pretty good at recognising hardware so I thought I'd give it another go. Its one of those card modems that has the connecter pop out the back of it when you press it (no dongle) and its 56k, v92 etc.
There must be some settings that will make it work (if the modems any good that is).
Can someone give me some advice on this one please.

Don't know if the above will help but could be worth a read anyway.

122470 2003-02-20 01:43:00 If it doesn't work with W98 or NT, there may be a fault. :-( I assume that the MS OSs found an approprraite driver for the model you have.

A couple of Linux compatibility lists I found (using "PCMCIA hayes optima modem linux" in google) show the Hayes Optima modem known to them as "?". That means it's not known to be a WinModem (red WM in their chart).

122471 2003-02-20 03:57:00 I'm pretty sure its not a Winmodem as Mandrake picked it up quick smart on the install. Its just that it won't get passed that second phase.
I had drivers for it for Win98 and NT, but it did same thing as its doing with Linux.
Its just, if someone could tell me what to put into the modem command section, I would be obliged and it might help.

WinNT=Squawk
Linux=Squawk

Three strikes and you're out ?:|

It sounds awfully like a dud modem to me. You might be blowing up the proverbial dead horse there but keep trying, if you win we might all learn something.

Cheers
