122332 2003-02-19 00:22:00 ADSL finally arrived at our local exchange and we had fun and games configuring the routers (one in Canada) to work with ICQ file sharing, and Netmeeting. Most of the configuration needed to be done at my end as both ICQ and NM had worked ok when I was on dial up.

My basic set up is a Dynalink RTA 220 router connected to a DSE 8 port switch with 3 computers networked, 2 running Win98SE and one Win95.

The method used to get ICQ file sharing to work was similar to that suggested at this site for another type of router:

Apparently 5 ports have to be mapped to the machine you want to receive files on.
This is done with the Dynalink router by setting up 5 virtual servers each with the port numbers selected, I used those suggested at the web site above.

Then ICQ has to be configured to listen on those ports from Preferences-Connections-User, and manually set the port range rather than using the default dynamically assigned ports.

When this was done file sharing was enabled. ( ICQ chat and messaging worked first time anyway without any special setup).

I am not using the firewall built into the router, as to set it up for the many applications currently accessing the internet through Kerio soft firewall is beyond me at the moment.

To get Netmeeting to work I set up virtual servers for ports 1503 and 1720, as suggested at several web sites. I afterwards found out from Dynalink that this router does support Netmeeting and that only port 1720 has to be opened, the other ports needed are taken care of by coding and firmware in the router.

At first I could send video and sound, ie. be heard and seen at the other end, but not receive, but for some reason by unchecking the box "automatically send video at the start of each call" from Tools-Options-Video, and then manually starting video after a call was received and accepted, it all worked OK.
Sound and vision were excellent with the higher speed connection.

I also subsequently received good support from Dynalink on how to configure the firewall for ICQ, and info on the Netmeeting setup.

It's still early days yet, with some learning curve to go through.

Some one has blundered. Heads will roll.
