122826 2003-02-21 02:47:00 I am running WinXP with DirectX 8. I run a couple of hungry programs including several FlightSims. Should I upgrade to DirectX 9 and are there any associated dramas. On a previous system I ran into mucho problemos and then found that DirectX is not removeable. Is there a noticeable improvement. I have a good GEForce Video card and Pentium 1800. bazmeister (3216)
122827 2003-02-21 03:00:00 Ok well before you decide, make a restore point using system restore.
There are various factors required to get full performance from a new DX version.
1. Your videocard must support it
2. Your game must support it.
DX is backwards compatable so games that run using 8.1 will continue to run on DX9.
Obviously DX9 is new and improved, so it should be better of getting it.
By making a restore point you can test the waters and if you don't like it revert back to how it was before.

122828 2003-02-21 12:47:00 I would agree.

Make a sys restore point first, but I would recommend it to anybody/everybody.

It improved performance for me in Day of Defeat on my GF4, and on the home PC, when playing Tony Hawks 3 off onboard VGA, it was getting about 1, maybe 2 FPS on Win2K with DX 8.1
Now, upgraded to XP, and also DX9 and I get a good 30-40 FPS!

Well worth it!

Cheers

122831 2003-02-22 03:40:00 Thanks for that info ... Yes I have XP and am definitely compatible with Direct X as the version 8 has been working OK. Good advice re the restore, I should have thought of that, last time I had my dramas I wasn't so texchnically advanced. A couple of guys on a FlightSim forum mentioned considerably improved frame rates which started me thinking -however sometimes it's hard to sort out hopeful enthusiasm with cold hard results. I'll give it a go........ thanks again. bazmeister (3216)
122832 2003-02-22 04:05:00 roofus, are you sure that going back to a restore point will revert a system back to the previous Direct X version?

I dunno about that myself... have read plenty of times that once Direct X is upgraded it is a pig of a thing to get rid of and return to the previous version. Doing a system restore sounds just too easy. ?:|

122833 2003-02-22 06:43:00 I'm sure it works, its the whole idea behind system restore.
Its the same with WMP, you can install it, but you can't uninstall it unless you made a restore point before installation.

122834 2003-02-22 07:20:00 Yeah, I checked the MS website.. but yes, sys restore monitors all changes like that. Similar to some ghosting software I've had the chance to use recently.... That was brilliant...
