2003-02-23 02:58:00 | That was quick Pollly, dot com does seem to have an unpleasant side indeed,I simply couldn't be rude to such a pleasant chap as Roofus. If the light referred to is one of those downlights,I understand the problem,I have a lot of them and am constantly replacing bulbs,if they don't work one has to pull it out of ceiling, along with part of ceiling, they are a lot of fun, could do with dot com standing by ladder giving his opinions.

2003-02-23 03:01:00 | Graham L, That Electrician that used to grab 230v didnt happen to have the initials C.W. did he? One of my early bosses (with those initials) used to do just that. He also had a habit of grabbing your hand or touching you whilst he was alive. (Imagine that sort of carry on today) Incidentally, Im told he died last year of natural causes, well in his 90s. Bob

2003-02-23 03:29:00 | > Hey I resent that cheap crack about accountants GF > ;) Keep them for the lawyers I think GF said that cause i'm an accountant wotz ;-) And yes it is one of those downlight things, it's not my place (i rent it) so i'm not going to get too concerned about it. But the technical comments here confirm what i thought. Thanks guys. Hey dot com, your the coolest!!!!!!! lol

2003-02-23 03:42:00 | are you suggesting that,that was the cause of his longevity?;) | Thomas (1820) | |
2003-02-23 03:51:00 | all home handymen think they are qualified to fit up an extension lead. a distribution board on the end of a crossed up extension lead can be a death trap. ----and why caravans have double pole main switches. went to school with a lad who's favourite trick was to stick a screw driver in an electric outlet--his only concession to safety was to stand on a bit of wood.....if you are still alive Pete F--how y goin?

2003-02-23 04:06:00 | So Roofus, the information gradually arrives to make sense maybe. Now we know that the fixture is a downlight - metal? Probably. So it is probably earthed if it was installed by a competent person. So your original thought of a broken neutral could well be right as you could have got a phase to earth shock from the live terminal to the earthed case of the fitting. I suggest you get the landlord to get it fixed.

2003-02-23 04:17:00 | Sorry Thomas, Ive no idea what caused his longevity. Theoretically he should have been reduced to bones and buttons by the age of 45. However, there was something about his body resistance that allowed him to get away with a lot more than the average human. He also had a party trick of stalling any old (50s) four cylinder, side valve, car by placing his crossed forearms across the sparkplugs. That wasnt a trick I ever got the urge to try and replicate! :^O

2003-02-23 10:11:00 | Skin resistance actually Bob, it varies widely across the human (and not so human) race. The drier the skin, the higher the resistance and the less the risk of minor shocks. It is no protection against serious shocks though, so those who play such tricks usually have a single-point contact with the live power and insulating boots between their body and earth. Many electricians have relied on their boots or a wooden floor to protect them when livened up. Cheers Billy 8-{)

2003-02-23 22:42:00 | >You use those double ended extension cords (a tapon at each end) do you? Scary thing is that i have seen those used in a liteshow, on a stage, at a pub . There are some dumb****s around! BTW . NZ is slowly moving away from the bayanet lightfitting, which i am glad of . This is why bulkhead fittings (illuminated bricks) are now only available with ES (screwtype) sockets, and more and more of the bulbs in supermarkets are ES . Bayanet fitting are often cheap plastic that can't take the heat, as said above, but ES type ones generally can . . Clueless
