| 122681 | 2003-02-20 23:45:00 | Hi F1 Does anyone know of software that will monitor my Jetstream connection on a Cisco router? I did a search and have seen Ethereal referred, but I don't think it will work on my router. I want to be able to have a report that filters ports, traffic destinations and if possible, connection to Windows 2000 Active Directory to allow for user usage. I need this because the sites and ports accessed by users do not work if I put a proxy in between and I do not want to have a proxy. I am looking at visualware at present. regards Marty |

| 122682 | 2003-02-21 02:29:00 | Hi Marty, Ethereal is a network traffic monitor/sniffer and will log any traffic transmitted over a network that doesn't use a switch. An easy way to determine if ethereal will work on your set-up would be to use the Knoppix Linux disk from the October PC World. Depending on how you set-up the ethereal capture will determine how large the file would be. You could easily run into GB of saved data over a very short period. Ethereal will give you IP address connection info (ie from/to ) as well as any data that is transmitted. It needs to be used with caution. |

| 122683 | 2003-02-21 03:44:00 | Can't you configure the router to keep logs? If it's using IOS I'd think it could do this. The documentation might be a bit horrendous but have a look at the www.cisco.com site. But ethereal running on a machine in the network shold handle it too. If the router feeds a switch you might have to get the router doing the logging, or put a machine on a hub with the switch, so it can see all the traffic. |
