1331028 2013-03-02 23:42:00 Hi - I'm obviously one of lifes little innocents as I was quite surprised to find that friend says he never (with emphasis!) registers or signs up on any website with his true name and details So now, just out of interest, I'm wondering how widespread or 'normal' that is and would love to hear from others about what they generally do in this respect, anonymously of course
Thanks.

1331029 2013-03-03 00:00:00 As a general rule I never use my real name and use a secondary web email address. DOB is never true.

The exception is when I'm going to buy something with credit card where details need to match. Even then don't give correct DOB use 1/1/xx

Don't have Facebook account other the one I made up to create my spotify account which has no friends and links to a web email

1331030 2013-03-03 01:04:00 You can get into a no-win situation, with job seeker websites.

Obviously you have to use your real name and cell-phone number. (The year of birthday shouldn't be asked on legit job seeker websites)

Always use a secondary email address, set up to receive work requests.

I posted my CV on several Australian websites, and the spam immediately started.

I even got spam SMS messages on my mobile.

It's very irritating.

1331031 2013-03-03 01:29:00 I use my real details for everything (I don't really see the point in not), although I normally withhold my address unless something's being delivered. pcuser42 (130)

1331033 2013-03-03 02:41:00 Yeh I'm the same, real for everything, why with-hold it? What do you gain from making it up? I Address though I put as different, as mentioned, to protect physical privacy. Chilling_Silence (9)
1331034 2013-03-03 02:59:00 Some places which I only visit once/seem mildly suspect I'll use a form of fake ID, for the most part though, no one really cares what my real name is. "John Holt" would mean as much as "Bob Dylan" to most people. Most information asked for is pretty anonymous anyway. The most anyone would get if they "hacked" PF1 would be I'm an 18 year old male from New Zealand... not much to go by to be honest.

Again, only bother with address if it's needed for some reason.
