1329865 2013-02-25 08:38:00 As per the title, I am looking for a good reliable wifi USB dongle for my openelec media server as the current one is dying.

I don't want to have to do any major hacks to get it going, looking for something easy to setup or with native kernel support

Cheers

1329866 2013-02-25 09:43:00 Depends on your version of Linux, most of them are O K with version 12. PENTIUM (426)

Here is a list on the Debian wiki wiki.debian.org
Most just need proprietary firmware, which isn't usually much problem.

1329868 2013-02-25 09:58:00 Unless things have changed it is the chipset that is important - unfortunately manufacturers tend to change the WLAN card chipset without changing the model name on the box. This means (or at least used to mean??) that you can go and purchase a particular model that works fine, pass on the details (say) a month later to your friend who buys the "same" one and it does not work.

Have a look at linuxwireless.org

1329870 2013-02-28 06:45:00 Just as an update:

went out on a limb and tried: www.ascent.co.nz after doing some reading. According to some articles, it should be natively supported by Linux kernel

And it was !! :D

Plug and play, no configuration required in openELEC 1.02 other than to change WLAN0 to WLAN1. Updated to openELEC 2.0 and things are sweet

(Incidentally: this network adapter replaced a Linksys WUSBGC Ver 3 which was also plug and play - after I had set up encryption etc of course)

1329871 2013-02-28 07:04:00 What, no driver disk full of crapware required? :devil fred_fish (15241)
1329872 2013-02-28 08:58:00 Well I have a driver disc sitting here beside me, but it says "Windows". I would have assumed the disc should be saying "Linux". Oh well... guess not all OS's are created equal :D Myth (110)
