1304887 2012-10-03 06:48:00 I am returning to New Zealand with my mobile phone. I am back for a week for work but I definitely need a phone and some data. It's been a couple of years since I went back so I'm not up to date with the following:

1) who has the most coverage?
2) who has the cheapest call rates best packages for calling and data?
3) Is prepaid still way overpriced or do they have pre-paid 'plans?'
4) Is the networking browsing fast and affordable?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

1304888 2012-10-03 06:55:00 2degrees are cheaper for most usage scenarios, and offer some pre-pay 'plans' as such - e.g. $19 for 30min talk / 300 texts / 600mb data or something along those lines. Their coverage is pretty good - they piggy-back off Vodafones network in some areas to make up for their own lack of coverage. In most densely-populated areas, though, I believe Telecom still have the best coverage for a solid data connection - not that Voda/2D are bad, I've just had better experience in this regard with Telecom. inphinity (7274)
1304889 2012-10-03 07:14:00 Where will you be based? 2D is cheaper but if you are in the areas that they may not support they do roam under Vodafone but the internet prices skyrockets ... other fees remain the same though.

In terms of post paid, 2D has some nice plans if you plan to talk A LOT .. in your one week. Like they have 100 odd bonus minutes. I guess for most people for a week stay, prepay plans would probably be sufficient.

1304890 2012-10-03 09:47:00 Best coverage is Telecom NZ

Right now they have a $19 prepay pack that gives you 60 mins calls, 500mb data and 5k texts.

Telecom network browsing is pretty fast, little higher connection times than WiFi due to cell latency but other than that, just as fast if not faster. You won't find the network overloaded on the data side :D not enough people know how to use it.

Calling and data are hard to find together, usually it's calls and texts or texts and data. Other than the $19 plan all the other combos are pretty crappy and over priced. It's the only combo pack that makes NZ look civilized.

That $19 deal was copied by both Telecom and Vodafone from 2Degrees

1304892 2012-10-03 19:34:00 Yeah and without a doubt the Telecom XT Network has the best coverage / speeds.
I've recently had to change to 2degrees because of work, man it's *so* bad it's not even funny :(

Also, make sure your phone supports them. XT is the equivalent frequencies to AT&T in the USA, 850 / 1900 frequencies.

1304893 2012-10-03 19:43:00 You could look at Skinny if you want to talk allot. $4 / week.. paulw (1826)
1304894 2012-10-03 21:02:00 I might add, although that $19 deal was copied by By all the other providers (except Skinny :p) they all offer 50 mins instead of 60. So the telecom deal is probably better but as Paulw said Skinny is pretty good, esp if you aren't here for long. You pay per week and all combos are $4. Might end up cheaper paying per week for heaps of data and talk time than getting a big monthly plan from telco or voda. The Error Guy (14052)
