Just bought a Nexus 7 really happy with it, but would like to use it when I go holiday overseas, while on the road( Aussie for the moment). I have a friend with an iphone and he can connect me through wifi. Is there other CHEAPER phones that do this? I have seen some wifi to G3-4 connectors reviewed ,but they seem to be tied up with providers, so I figured a phone connection may be better. Any advice welcome. |

I would've expected any android 4.0 and above device (and many 2.3s) to be able to do this, unless it's from a $2 shop or something maybe. |

My Vodafone 858 does it no problems, and I use it a lot at different places to get my Android Tablet onto the net. just as good as using a mobile modem stick on a laptop! Vodafone has just upped my data to 500 MB per month which is great.

I'm a complete newbe at anything above the most basic Nokia phone from 2 years ago and the Nexus has been a very steep learning curve for me (ie struggling uphill) . I'm getting there, and finding it very useful, but its a bit hard for us old farts to do a mindshift to a new OS. So do I look for a phone with 2.3S or 4.0 or is there a model running these specs I should look out for?? Sorry for the complete lack of much in the way of clues in this area |

AFAIK anything running android 2.2 or above can act as a wireless hotspot. Most if not all sold these days are on 2.2 or above, so it shouldn't be a problem. As LL said, the vodafone 858 can act as a hotspot, and can be had for just $100. Obviously its specs aren't great at all, but it will work fine if you only want it to be a wireless hotspot. |

Yeah Nick G is right, this came out over two years ago with Android-2.2 (Froyo), which pretty much *everything* these days runs that or newer :) |

When I was in Aussie I used an optus prepaid sim on my iphone and personal hotspot was disabled. I can understand why as it was $2 per day for unlimited data, texts and calling. |
