1329913 2013-02-26 04:19:00 MSE has tested quite poorly in more than a few recent tests.
The best freeware A/V currently is Panda Cloud, closely followed by Avast.

Till they crash. Bitdefender+Kaspersky+Mcafee (the worst), +Norton+Symantec+Avast = Avoid. They may install OK. But sooner, or later they'll crash on you

So I'm fine to stay with MSE?

I have no problem with it. It stays out of the way, and I'm yet to have any issues with it.

I'd say now - download a free trial of a paid one. Run a full scan and find all the stuff MSE missed then go back to MSE... every few months or so get another free trial !

1329916 2013-02-26 09:18:00 Yeah that's why I ditched MSE, it has a stupid habit of firing off scans at retarded times too I'm surprised to see you saying that Chill! I have MSE set to to update before starting, then run a full scan once a week at a specific time, and it goes off like clockwork. I'll not comment on effectiveness, however it never finds anything on my computer but picked up the odd nasty on my son's until he went overseas and since then there's been nothing. Actually, MWB and Spybot both found regular infections on his as well. Can't think why :D

Cheers

Else run an ESET online scanner every now and then. The only limitation is that it must be run on IE :(

1329918 2013-02-26 23:18:00 Well i'm running Avast now as a test. Overall it hasn't changed since v5. My only problem at the moment is that it uses 13mb of ram instead of the 300kb that MSE uses. goodiesguy (15316)
1329919 2013-02-26 23:54:00 I use avast!7 free and really like it. I've had it for a few years now and have yet to be infected. That said it is only one of several layers of security I have, so.... I also use Malwarebytes PRO and periodically scan with Hitman Pro and Superantispyware to catch anything avast & MBAM don't. I also use a sandbox to browse with mostly and NoScript to avoid XSS and drive by downloads. Plus a good dollop of common sense. I also sometimes scan with the eset online scanner to make sure avast is doing it's thing, and eset has never detected anything on my machine yet either.

I used to use Avira free and that was an excellent AV except it started to get very buggy with every new programme update. That and they partnered up with ASK toolbar - even if you chose not to install the toolbar (and by not doing so you didn't get website protection - just file protection) you still got all the ASK files downloaded and on your system, and a particular ASK registry key that used to still dial home - that's even when you selected NOT to have the toolbar. You couldn't uninstall the files either - they'd just be replaced everytime you got a definition update. (Ironically anything ASK related used to be detected by Avira). So I canned Avira and have found avast a lot better and have yet to have problems with crashes etc, and so far have only had one false positive. I used to use AVG and don't have a lot of faith in that. I've not tried MSE myself but I have family who have used it and got badly infected.

That's just my two cents - I'm not a computer technician though, just a home user.

Tried it for 10 minutes and gave up. It was slow and sluggish.

1329922 2013-02-27 03:35:00 Did you enable the detection of PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) as well?

Where do you find this setting Chill?
