123264 2003-02-22 21:02:00 Hey everyone.

I'm in need of big help!
I just got myself a new Athlon 2000+ XP CPU, I stuck it in my motherboard, and lo-and-behold my BIOS thought it was a 1250mhz (I believe).

I decided to do a BIOS upgrade, and just my luck, it stalled half way through updating.
This isn't my first visit to the land of failed BIOS updates, and the last time saw me ripping out my BIOS chip, sticking it in another computer, and flashing it (properly) from there.

I have an Epox EP-8KTA3L+ motherboard, and I was hoping someone could give me a suggestion on how to fix this. If needs be I'll swap the BIOS into another computer, but it isn't my first choice...

I live in Palmerston North if you know of anyone around here who does BIOS reprogramming, etc.

Cheers,
Jonathan Giles

123265 2003-02-22 22:22:00 Well the original problem was not having the FSB set to 133MHz.

100 * 12.5 = 1250
133 * 12.5 = 1662.5 (XP2000+)

Not sure who can do the BIOS reprogramming.

123266 2003-02-24 01:17:00 Hmm try booting straight to DOS & flash it there, i never flash with windows running. Maybe if you can find the jumper on your MB that will clear the bios/cmos settings it will come right, if not take the battery out of the MB for a few hours & them put it back....this may help you get booted into DOS if the system is not booting at all. Then flash again.

There might be a 133 bus setting in the bios which will allow your system to correctly detect the bus setting, else it will be a jumper on the MB itself.

123267 2003-02-24 01:27:00 what error or message do you get when you try to boot up? robsonde (120)
123268 2003-02-24 01:47:00 As somebody has already pointed out, your problem originally was just a jumper or maybe BIOS setting to change FSB from 100MHz to 133MHz.

As for your new problem of BIOS update failing halfway through, can you tell us what type of BIOS you have? i.e. Award / AMI / Phoenix.

There are ways of reflashing the BIOS if this happens without having to put BIOS chip into another PC.

123269 2003-02-24 04:52:00 I have an Award BIOS, and I receive no error messages.

I will attempt the other suggestions right now.

Please continue with the suggestions,
Thanks a lot,
Jonathan Giles

and this general discussion:
