123133 2003-02-22 04:52:00 I recently burned a whole lot of linux ISO's I had sitting around to save space & afterwards deleted them. The only problem is that I cant delete the debian folder...

All the others redhat, mandrake, knoppix, the lot, they deleted fine. Also I could delete the ISO's so I did clear up the drive space, but the Debian folder remains.

When attempting to delete it comes up with an error dialog <& an annoying noise X-(> saying "Cannot delete Debian 3: It is being used by another person or program, close any programs that might be usinf the file & try again"

Im running XP SP1
the folder isnt read only
no one else uses my PC & I cant see any program that would be using an "empty" folder
fat32

basically the only problem I have with this is the cosmetic one, but any advice appreciated

oh PS, I cant rename it or the directory it resides in D:/Linux/Debian 3/

123134 2003-02-22 05:20:00 Have you tried doing it in Safe Mode? Susan B (19)
123135 2003-02-22 05:28:00 I have come across this kind of thing a couple of times with deletions, and noticed that on rebooting i always seem to be able to delete these files/folders. Don't know why??? J ZEP (336)

123137 2003-02-22 21:48:00 As you are using FAT32 if you have an old Win98 boot disk you try deleting it from dos . Stick the boot disk in and then type d: from the prompt . This should take you to the d drive . Type dir /p (note the space between dir and /p) as this will show the directories on the d drive one page at a time and hit any key to show the next page .

This is useful if there are a lot of directories and files on the drive .

Navigate to the directory that contains the directory that you want to remove like cd \linux and once again dir to show you what the name of the debian directory is . Then deltree d:\linux\debian~1 and all going well the directory should be no more .

123138 2003-02-23 01:05:00 Try deleting it while loged on as the Administrator. Archibald (180)
123139 2003-02-23 20:29:00 As I am the only user <& have a high opinion of my abilities ;-)> I always log in with full administrator rights.

however, I did log in as "The" administrator & to no avail.

123140 2003-02-23 20:36:00 I think Gorela is on the right track.

Try MS-DOS mode, try safe mode, try command-prompt only option when booting, anything but normal windows.

My resolution for this has always been the good old Win98 Boot Disk, luckily since Ive started using NTFS more, Ive not had this. :-)

Cheers
