123339 2003-02-23 08:51:00 Everyone makes bad components.

It's just like the Fujitsu drive of Billy's it's a well documented knowledge that those drives WILL fail. Other drives of their's are fine.

I have two AMD rigs here. In reality there both over the top for the task they get used for most of the time. Have a Celeron in the house as well..... thats probably a tad over the top for what it does as well (needs more RAM though).

Generally you can not get software that will utilize the power of todays computers.

123341 2003-02-23 08:55:00 Yes - Most CPU's by far exceed their users expectations. Who needs a hyperthreading P4 for checking email?

What about the AMD Athlon XP Chips, and Windows XP?

123342 2003-02-23 08:58:00 Or save your money for an Athlon 64 (Hammer I'mmm 64bit desktop 64bit Linux).
The new HyperThreading Chips from intel run Really Hot if you have a look at some of the data on the web they're put at ~80W's heat output compared to less than 60 for the various Athlon Model's or the Non HT P4's.

123343 2003-02-24 03:30:00 I agree, just thinking that since the computer is not an absolute need, *I've already got two* I'll wait until a good price comes around! Then.... no matter what the specifications are, if its good.... ~~~~~ s y ~~~~~ (2054)

Correct me if I'm wrong (and someone no doubt will!) but isn't the Athlon XP 2000 only a 1.66Ghz processor whereas an Intel P4 2Ghz is actually 2Ghz? In that case they they wouldn't be the equivalent of each other, would they?

123345 2003-02-24 03:54:00 Adding to that, if I am indeed correct:

AMD Athlon XP2400+ (1.93GHz) $319.50 Starlyte Computers
Intel Pentium 4 2GHz (2GHz) $336.38 QMB Computers (http://www.pricespy.co.nz)

Not really twice the price.

123346 2003-02-24 03:56:00 Yes, you're right. But many people say a Athlon XP 2000+ feels as good OR BETTER than a P4. Don't ask me why...? ~~~~~ s y ~~~~~ (2054)

Yes but the AMD XP2400+ will perform like an Intel P4 2.4GHz.
Seen lots of benchmark tests and this would seem to be true. The P4 2.4GHz might win on a couple but then you can say 'but the AMD is only running a 1.93GHz!'

But then we all know that Ghz is not a true measurement of how good a CPU is or how fast it is. There are just some things a P4 will do better than an AMD, and vice versa.

I remember that AMD's were fast, but as soon as we started talking about multi-tasking, etc, the CPU's just weren't up to the task. Wouldn't know how accurate that statement is/was but there must be an element of truth to it there??
