A full format & restore should kill off any worms, trojans or virus that is lurking, whereas a partial restore may leave it in memory, on the hard drive or in the Master boot record, however if a virus is in the MBR or in memory Nortons would probably have detected it.
Also make sure you run Adaware as someone has already suggested.
Judging by the age of the machine though, I would be surprised if it isn't hardware related.
The full text of the Illegal Ops. will help though.

123243 2003-02-23 03:17:00 You said above you have an HP restore disk, I take this to maen the PC is an HP as well. I have just been fixing an HP Pavilion 3216 that had a problem that sounds similar.

When the PC boots, windows straight away has a BSOD (Blue Screen) error referencing something to do with VXD. I can't remeber the numbers or any other info on the error but I am almost certain runDLL32 was in there also...

I had this problem off a clean format and install of windows, so it wasn't caused by virus/trojan etc...

Eventually I traced my problem to a fault in the on-board video card that was in the system. It had been working fine, but when windows tried to install a driver for it it faulted. I was able to run it in standard VGA mode only - ie safe mode...

The system now runs with no problems since I disabled the on-board video card. (the system was always using a PCI card that was better, but the on-board card hadn't been disabled)

Does this sound anything like the problem you have??

123244 2003-02-23 04:02:00 rundll.32 is very familiar to me, i am always getting errors here. i have a nvida vid card so can i disable the onboard video? i recently updated the drivers for the nvida and think that the probs may have started not long after that could this mean a conflict of some sort?

would like more info on what you did to the other pavilion mine is a 6320.

the only thing i think is strange is that i do a restore and everything is fine for a week or so then suddenly turns to custard.
thanks
mike

123246 2003-02-24 08:54:00 In the device manager of windows - if you can successfully get into it - look under the heading "display adapters". If you have more than one adapter in that list, and one of them is your on-board video card, double click on it, and in the properties tab that pops up, click disable this device.

When you restart, if you look in the same place, the adapters icon should have a red X over it, and if you double click it, it should say the device is disabled. Click cancel.

In the device manager again, check that you have no other icons with X's or coloured exclamation marks. If you do, double click on the offending device and post back what it says about them.

If this seems to have no effect, you may need to do a system restore, and then follow these steps after the restore before everything goes pear shaped again...

Also, look in the motherboard manual to see if there is a way on the motherboard to disable the on-board video, as this is a better way than doing it through windows - some early HP computers do not have this capability. There should be a jumper you can set, or a bios setting...

Hope this helps,.
Craig.

Also, if this has no effect, when the computer starts up, press and hold F8 to get the startup menu. Select "Logged" and when the computer boots, read the file "C:\bootlog.txt" as it should have some info as to the file that is causing the problems.

IS THIS ANY HELP

123248 2003-02-24 09:17:00 Um, seems a strange error to be occuring when you try and view the settings. Can you right click on the adapter and select disable? If not, there should be a button near the top of the screen with a red circle on it. Select the card to be disabled, and hover the mouse over this button - check it is disable and not uninstall (you don't want to uninstall it)

Could you find any info in the motherboard manual about disabling the card that way?

Craig.

123249 2003-02-24 19:16:00 Its not that strange that you get a general protection fault when your trying to look at a piece of hardware thats not going,
But thats all i can say, sorry can't help with your problem, i just thought i'd make that comment in regards to craig b's post.
