123103 2003-02-22 21:19:00 Noted roofus, and duly admonished.

However, I took account of the fact that the computer freezes even in safe mode. I regarded that as a quamtum escalation of the problem since SFA is running under those conditions.

To avert the inevitable, SFA = Sweet Fanny Adams,
or the alternative explanation of your choice. ;)

123104 2003-02-22 21:46:00 As Merlin said, there is a whole heap of reasons why a Windows Protection Error message may occur, just read the MS Knowledge Base.
It is very unlikely that the problem can be resolved on Press F1 except by luck. Geebee99 will probably just have to work through the trouble shooting procedure.
On the other hand, formatting and re-installing Windows is just a cop-out and a last resort. If that is done every time there is ever a problem, then the cause is never found out, nothing is learnt, and the same thing could happen again if the system and apps are re-installed exactly the same as previously, or, it is in fact a hardware problem like faulty memory.

123105 2003-02-23 03:34:00 Well Terry,

IMHO, at 4-5 years old & W95, a format would be a rational decision to cut losses and move forward. Seriously, I don't think the sum of GeeBee's knowledge is going to be much advanced by working through this problem unless he (she?) has a serious interest in W95.

Pu it this way, if GB had to pay for the fault finding process he would be far better off to invest the money in a new computer. Conversely, if he has the skills and knowledge to go through the process you advocate then why not? As you say, nothing is learned by avoiding analysis.

Somehow I feel that GB is caught between those two extremes and wouldn't mind a fast track process to a working computer again. A happy compromise would be to carry out such tests as fall within GB's competence, guided by PF1 advice and if that doesn't produce results, go for the reformat & reinstallation. At least there is an FAQ to guide him through that.

Alas, it is not an ideal world. I studiously avoid such learning processes by use of drive imaging. For me it is a commercial decision to forgo deeper understanding of computer failures in favour of productivity and family time. I do wish I knew more and I am constantly staggered by the depth of knowledge obtained by those on PF1 who have spent the time to delve deeper into the mysteries of Windows and the BSOD.

123106 2003-02-23 04:57:00 Not an easy decision at all Billy, win95 doesnt have all the built in tools like msconfig and system file checker that 98 has. If the disk(s) are available then maybe a reinstall would be the way to go. If the same problem occurs then it points to hardware.
If the problem goes then it maybe it was vxd trouble.

I suppose only GB99 can decide which way to go.

Just a thought, I recently downloaded MSconfig for W95 from a site mentioned here on PF1. I haven't time to look for it right now but do you think downloading that could help BG move forward. It is a small download, just the exe file.

123108 2003-02-23 19:09:00 Hi Billy, thats a good idea, if msconfig can be downloaded using another computer and then transfered by floppy to c:\windows\system. It can be run from safe mode, and will show the programs running at start up, and the diagnostic start up could be used to try and get to the fault.

In fact several of the win98 utils will run on win95.

123109 2003-02-23 19:38:00 Hi Terry

I have swapped favourite programs between operating systems for years, in fact I used to have some WFWG 3.11 bits and pieces running on W95/98 until I wised up to beter options.

How about listing the W98 utils that you know can run on W95 and put them into a an FAQ with references to the URLs or other resources where they can be found? I'll look for the source for MSconfig95 and post it later today if found.

Cheers

123110 2003-02-23 20:28:00 I searched my archives and came up with these:

This URL (www2.whidbey.com) leads to a download for the correct Msconfig files for both W95 and W2K (Thanks to Jen C for the original link)

and This URL (www.annoyances.org) leads to a site that discusses more features that can be added to W95 including registry backup.

They may be of help in narrowing down the source of these problems.

123111 2003-02-24 00:27:00 This is the direct link to PC911 where the registry backup/fix scanreg package for win95 complete can be downloaded, its a bit hard to find:

123112 2003-02-24 04:26:00 That's great Terry

Now all we have to do is get GB to do a couple of downloads and get started on some diagnostics!
