123250 2003-02-22 13:58:00 What about this (www.gateway.com) little beastie?

I want it purely for the plasma TV... don't think they are that cheap in this part of the world yet... what do you guys think? Is there any other package similar to this one??

Lo.

123251 2003-02-22 18:48:00 I am not sure I would call that cheap.
Also, Gateway had some shockers when they were in NZ. Could they be better from overseas? I don't think so. I know I wouldn't buy it.
Interesting option though.

123252 2003-02-22 19:15:00 One wonders if things will go that way with regards to monitors. Thomas (1820)
123253 2003-02-22 20:17:00 Yes Thomas things will go that way in regards to monitors, They are infact cheaper to make (once economies of scales) is reached. Also with tv transmissions moving to digital then to High definition, your gonna need a tv like that to get the best for your viewing. roofus (483)
123254 2003-02-22 21:17:00 Hi Lo,

My concern would be that it only appears to support NTSC as there was no mention of PAL. I think that would mean that you would have to run it through a VCR to be able to watch our broadcasts. Don't know what that would do to the quality of the picture..

123255 2003-02-22 22:15:00 Robo - Yeah... but cheap for a 42" plasma screen! Don't really care about the PC... I always though 42" plasma screens were $12,000 and up for the screen alone in NZ??

Gorela - Good point... do Australia have Gateway, or not? If they do, then surely they would have this option, and are the NTSC or PAL based?

Lo.

123256 2003-02-22 22:40:00 Don't quote me on the exact regional breakdown, Lo.

Basically North American TV signals are NTSC, Europe I think use PAL-Secam, while Oz and ourselves use the PAL. From memory the Oz frequency range is slightly different to our own, but is useable and most TV's for Oceania have a dual setting to enable use in either market.

I thought Gateway had shutdown all regional outlets?

123257 2003-02-22 22:44:00 Yep it would seem so. :O

Straight from the horses (www.gateway.com.au) mouth.

123258 2003-02-23 20:25:00 Gateway website won't respond to any request for help. In fact, they don't even list other countries if you want to use their helpdesk form on their website.

I had to replace a laptop battery recently and the drama I went thru put me off Gateway forever.

I eventually found an australian vendor to supply the battery and it was mega bucks.

123259 2003-02-23 21:21:00 Yes, I'm afraid that for NZers, the gateway is closed, locked and bolted ... Biggles (121)
