2003-02-22 08:39:00 | I have been having some major problems with win 98 in the last few weeks. When i boot up my comp goes to the windows splash screen as normal then the hard drive statrs working really hard then i get a black screen which flashes blue then the pc shuts down and reboots itself saying"windows did not load properly on last attempt run in safe mode" which i can do and run virus, scan disk and find nothing. I run my HP restore disk and everything is fine for a week or so then it happens again. I have just restored the system for the third time in a month, anyone have any ideas? I have tried to trace it to one particular event that started it but cant think of anything. Please help thanks

2003-02-22 08:50:00 | Post some details of your system so that we know what we are dealing with here, but in the meantime, did you do anything unusual with your computer before this all started? If the problem is surviving your HP restore disk it might be a program you have installed recently that is causing problems. Is your AV up to date and have you checked for spyware? It gets into the best cared for computers, even those that don't surf dangerously so trying Spybot and/or Adaware6 might clear out some issues. This is not really my area of expertise so others will almost certainly be able to offer better advice, however if there are no malware or virus issues and it survives system restores, it could be an hardware fault. Sorry I can't be of any real help. Cheers Billy 8-{)

2003-02-22 08:53:00 | A wee bit more info will help track the problem down. Machine specs. - age, cpu, how much ram, Operating system etc. When you do the restore, is it a full or partial? Have you added any new hardware recently? eg. video card, ram etc. What video card are you running? What virus proggy are you using? Have you run a trojan scanner?

2003-02-22 09:11:00 | Find a trojan scanner here & give it a whirl. Trojans are more often than not missed by antivirus proggys but can do just as much damage. www.tucows.com Can you post any of the illegal operations? Are they the same on all the time? In my experience most Illegal ops. are caused by faulty ram. But if you can post the exact text of the faults we can narrow the problem down to Operating system or hardware.

2003-02-22 09:16:00 | Hope ram isnt faulty, had it replaced about 18 months ago, am downloading a trojan scanner called swatit as we speak. most illegal operations cause a fault in rundll.32 or words to that effect, but comp is fine now u see but will slowly turn to **** in the next week or so will report on findings in trojan scan
