123843 2003-02-25 08:40:00 On booting my PC, the "Dial-Up" (Connect To) window to connect to the internet keeps popping-up, even when I don't need to access the internet. Why is this happening?

The Tools-Internet Options from the menu bar does not seem to have anything that can stop this annoying pop-up.

Kindly advise.

Thanks.

123844 2003-02-25 08:52:00 "E.T. phone home"

Some program that you have installed and included in start up wants to dial in (and probably call home).

This could be anything including an anti-virus program wanting to check for updates automatically.

You could see if you can identify the offending program by going
Start
Run
msconfig

Have a look in Start-up and see if there is anything there that could be doing it.

Also look at the settings of your anti-virus program and see if there is some setting such as "automatically check for updates when windows starts"

123845 2003-02-25 09:06:00 This is exactly the sort of thing Zone Alarm was made to catch..

Installing ZA will show what is trying to phone home, or use the net for any reason, and will also allow one to block access to any programme that does not have good reason to call out.

Once identified, you can decide also if you want rid of it. There is a good chance it is spyware.

That would be my recomendation anyways.

123846 2003-02-25 09:11:00 Im with Clueless... Get Ad-Aware 6 and see what comes up.

Check the msconfig too, and remove stuff at startup, and a firewall will tell you what's trying to conenct, and the name of the file hopefully, so you can have a search on your PC and if its spyware, delete it!

123849 2003-02-26 05:08:00 But does clvn have Zone Alarm?

Odd with that bug. I don't get that problem, perhaps ZA can be used to stop itself from "phoning home"
