123800 2003-02-25 05:52:00 We are considering purchasing a new OS.

Currently using Novel server with Win 98 on the desktops.

Looking for advise, re new system as the current one is only licenced for 5 users.

Any advise would be appreciated :0)

We now want to incorporate Jetstream internet connection and are operating Vision Accounting package along with Office97.

123801 2003-02-25 06:03:00 Insufficient detail

What you ask is vague.
You give no indication regarding the type of business, perceived access/restrictions to files, folders or programs.

While an NTFS based system has advantages in some areas, DOS based operating systems have advantages in others. *nix systems also have advantages in specific areas.
Conversely all systems have disadvantages depending on needs and requirements.

Still you have asked for free advise - prepared to be overwhelmed with personal opinions without much basis.

123802 2003-02-25 06:13:00 The company I work for employed a consultant. It probably worked out cheaper in the end cause he advised something outside the square that my employer hadn't considered. And his fee was tax deductable

123803 2003-02-25 07:51:00 Well I like Novell and find Windows Networks with their Domains a pain. Peer-to-peer Windows is OK.

That said, you are really short on detail.

Is your network administrator really comfortable with Novell or wanting to switch to a Windows server?

Does the budget include training for the Admin?

Are you allowing for Consultants to set it up?

Is Novell causing problems?

If you upgrade your operating systems will this entail hardware upgrades?

Is the company planning on expanding?

What sort of budget is the firm wanting to invest in IT?

Is your Admin liable to stay around or is staff turnover likely?

In what way does the current system not meet requirements?

......

A few questions to consider, there are many others!

123804 2003-02-25 08:12:00 Have a look at using Linux as your NOS - it is free and when using SAMBA will act pretty much like a WIndows server. I look after three such systems all with RedHat Linux 7.0 or 7.3 and Windows workstations. JohnD (509)
123805 2003-02-25 08:19:00 Redhat 8 has come a long way since redhat 7.3
I would suggest you take a look at it.

From a desktop POV, its quite good, but obviously not for everybody :-)

WineX might be a handy investment should you choose to go Linux :-)

123806 2003-02-25 13:15:00 You need to come up with a more specific list of what you want from your new OS . Think about where you want to take your business . Sometimes to much technology can bog down your business .

If you're not too concerned with cost, stick with Windows products for your Desktops . From what I can tell the vision software only runs on a Windows Platform .

On the server side, you can't beat Linux for cost, but you'll still need someone to set it up and maintain it for you . You don't mention what version of Novell you are using, but they have a very solid product, but like linux it needs someone to set it up and maintain . Last time I looked, Novell engineers don't come cheap!

Microsoft Server OS is pretty solid . It is easy to configure, maintain and it's compatible with all your software . Windows 2000 Small Business Server is a good product for a small company . It's handy if you want to have a database server, e-mail server and firewall all rolled into one . Uses wizards to configure just about anything .

Can be pricey, and needs uses buckets of resources are the only downsides I can think of .

Best advice I can give is clearly define where your business is going, decide on a buget, seek out a professional to help you get technology that is going to work for you and your employees .

123808 2003-02-25 18:44:00 Just to add my two cents worth.

I now do 90% of my computing in Linux (RedHat 8), and runs app's like MYOB First Accounts 3.1 on Linux with wine.

Infact there isn't much you can't do in Linux, I just haven't got round to making my games run in Wine-X (Direct X emulator).

Cheers
