What operating system are you using? 2. What version of MSWorks are you using? I use WinXP Pro and MSWorks Version 6. After working on a MSWorks file I can click on the File > Close on the left top File menu and close THAT file. I can also have a numer of MSWorks or Word or Notepad files open at the same time and cut and paste between them. If you click the X at the top right then you will get the chance to close and save the file you are working on. Works will then close. > or can i do something to change it? > i want to go from file to file without leaveing works > if possible. > this is time consuming and frustrating and up till > now thought this was normal. is it? or am i just > being picky? I don't think you are picky. You just might want to tell us out here things like what Operating system, RAM, Works Version you are using. We are not in front of YOUR computer right now. I am sure I can help but please help us to help you. > > thanxs > > Beetle |

2003-02-24 19:36:00 | OK, so you are new to computers. It helps if you say so. :-) Like I said before, to close just the document you are working on, use Ctrl+W. To close Word entirely use Alt+F4. To switch between all the documents you have open in Word use Ctrl+F6. Those are the quick keyboard shortcuts. It sounds like you are clicking on the Word program's closing buttons instead of the document's button. You should see two X's up the top right of your window. The uppermost X is to close the Word program, the lower one is to close the document currently open.

2003-02-25 02:44:00 | Hi Beetle, we were all newbies at one time. Am running same set up as you. Suggest open Word, you will get Doc 1 with a blank window that has a black cross top right and a white cross above it. Go to File, click open and double click on a Word file, file opens, there are still 2 crosses. Go to File, click open and double click on a second Word file, the second file opens but this time there is only a white cross. As stated by Susan you can hold down Cntrl key whilst clicking on w key, the second file will close ( for this file you could also click the white cross or go to File, click close). First file now shows with black and white crosses. As per Susan hold down Cntrl whist clicking F4 and Word will close. With 2 or more files open as per Susan hold down Cntrl and click F6, previous file will open. Suggest you experiment You are getting not allowed because you are not entering the command correctly or you are asking the programme to do something which the screen state cannot accept..

2003-02-25 03:04:00 | Excuse me butting in, but are you talking about MS Word. I have used all versions from 6 up to XP and have never seen a white cross. In top right all I have ever seen are the normal _ square and X. If you click on the x you will close word. To just close the document click file and close. Or if you want to save it,click file, save and close. If you click exit it will close word. Jack

2003-02-25 03:28:00 | um i hate to say this but i agree with jjjjj and i cannot get this other way of short cut keys to work ive tried. doesnt matter how many files i open no extra X box. and it always closes on last file shut regardless of me wanting to open a new file or start a new file. i am grateful for the help but it still does not work any different, and the short cut keys dont work for me, so any other ideas or do i just live with it? doesnt seem to matter if i click on just close for file, or close the works they both end up the same closed. thanxs Beetle

2003-02-25 03:53:00 | > i have said before that im new to this just not on this thread, re taken for ride or not. Sorry beetle. Although I normally read just about every thread here and manage to keep tabs on most people sometimes I do not remember the poster's experience even though their name is familiar. It is always a good idea to assume that no one here has heard of you before and thus provide as much relevant info as you can, even if you have said it all before a dozen times. :-) When you say you have MS Works and Word, are you absolutely sure that it is Word and not the MS Works' word processing program? There may be some subtle differences between the programs if you have the Works word processor. Anyway, have a look at the screenshot (www.topazz.orcon.net.nz) of my Word (XP version) to see where the crosses are. In the top right of the picture you can see the red button with a white cross. That is the one to close down Word. Underneath there is a grey square with a black cross in it - that is the cross to close down just the document you have open. I have hovered my mouse over it which is why you can see the words "Close Window". Remember, mine is the Win XP version - if you have an earlier version of Word it will look a bit different but there should still be two crosses. Regarding the keyboard shortcuts not working: you have to hold down your Ctrl key while you press the other key. > this is time consuming and frustrating and up till now thought this was normal. is it? or am i just being picky? No, you are not being picky. You do have a problem, one that is obviously causing a lot of frustration to you and one that can be solved with a bit of perservance. Keep trying and the team here will help you sort it out. :-)
