2003-02-24 07:33:00 | Have just done a scan with AdAware and its latest ref list and was astounded to find that it has picked up well over 30 files that it describes as "data miners" . All of these "data miner" files are from Paintshop Pro tutorial webpages that I have saved and they all have the file name "js . js" . It looks like they are javascript code files . I have renamed one of them and opened the webpage from my hard drive and the only thing that appears to be different is the disappearance of text in what looks like an advert box . No pic is displayed either with or without the js . js file . So what is the real purpose of these js . js files? Are they purely to "mine data"? If so, can they do that while just sitting on my hard drive or do I have to open the page from the internet location? I am going to delete them all but would be interested to know a bit more about them first if anyone could enlighten me .

2003-02-24 07:43:00 | Oh, and one more thing: AdAware says that there is a Cydoor folder within my Eudora as below but I cannot see it! :O Vendor: Cydoor Category: Data Miner Object Type: Folder Size:- Location: E:\Eudora\EudPriv\Ads\AdCache\ Last Activity:1 /02/2003 11:00:00 a.m. Risk LevelLow Comment: Description: Ad delivery software. I have my settings on "Show all hidden folders and files" and "Show protected operating system files" so how on earth is it able to be hidden? Or is AdAware telling lies?? Running Win XP Home.

2003-02-24 07:53:00 | The .js files could be picking up data such as your browsing habits, or sites you are visiting at the time you are visiting the site that uses those JS files. Probably safe to delete them though, if they're only in your Temporary Internet Files folder. And this "Cydoor" folder may not be named "cydoor"... though if it's in the Ads\AdCache folder of Eudora, it might be an ad that Eudora downloaded? Probably safe to delete everything in that folder, though normal backup-first routines should be used just in case. | agent (30) | |
2003-02-24 07:56:00 | Cydor is in the ad supported free version of Eudora. Its harmless, and even appears in the paid version but is unused. Just delete it, but it may recreate it in the free version. Its not nasty.

2003-02-24 07:57:00 | Hi Susan B, In answer to your 1st posting on this thread, below is a page that sort-of explains what "Data Mining" is about! There are screeds of simular on GOOGLE! Web Mining, Document Mining, Data Extraction, Knowledge Extraction Web mining project for fraud classification of companies on the web or public domain . Types of fraud classification include: General business (not building what is advertised) Ownership (different owners or ownership type then advertised) Financial (stock value) Foreign threat (building what is not advertised) Data extraction - Extract intelligence from code and defect databases to determine types of bugs and inspection criteria required to find them . This method involves mining requirements, design, code and defect databases to determine the most likely types of bugs and most importantly, the criteria required to find them during a review . Often times companies perform reviews to the WRONG criteria . Example, looking for logic bugs when most of the bugs are due to top level design . Focusing reviews on the wrong types of bugs costs time and money . The end result of this project will be a method and a tool to predict the types of bugs that exist in a software product . Previous data extraction projects- A United States patent - PStiMate, 1993 patent number #5,473,741 - Method for Determining the Time To Perform Raster Image Processing (RIP) . This algorithm was developed by extracting patterns in postscript files so as to predict the time required for that Postscript file to Rastor Impage Process . This is used by printing companies to schedule large printing jobs and quote accurate estimates to printing customers HTH's Cheers,Kiwitas,;-)

2003-02-24 07:57:00 | Eudora uses the cydoor people to supply the ads it displays. It doesn't contain any of their spyware. | bmason (508) | |
2003-02-24 08:02:00 | adware detects that folder due to it being a folder that stores adds that eudora dowloads. the adds come from cydoor. don't panic the add system is eudoras not cydoors. | tweak'e (174) | |
2003-02-24 08:33:00 | Thanks people . :-) Noticed all those js . js files when I first got them but thought they were necessary for the display of the webpages . Don't need all that junk on my hard drive so I have wrapped them all up and sent them on their way . As for the "Cydoor folder", I can see what you mean by it supplying the adverts . Will leave that one there since it appears to recreate itself all the time, but I have "modified" its contents a little . heh heh ]:)
