123569 2003-02-26 01:20:00 Microsoft produce two "suites" of programs.

- Works
- Office

Each suite is made up of a group of programs. Both suites contain the following programs
- A Word Processor (for typing letters, reports etc)
- A Spreadsheet (a bit like graph paper)
- A Database (a bit like a card file system)

Works is the cheaper suite (with less features), Office the more expensive suite (with lots of extra features).

Word (a Word Processor) is included with Office. Originally Works had a mini-Word program but may now have the full Word. Lots of things - like menus are similar between the different programs in the suites.

Programs are all software.

Sometimes the smaller screen is much smaller than when it is maximised, other times it is nearly the same size. It all depends on how it was set up. (When I reset up my computer the email program was a much smaller size and these buttons work in there as well so it's handy to know about them).

You won't lose any notes maximizing or minimizing a screen (but it's good practice to save your work regularly in case of power failures. Every 5 mins hit "save").

123571 2003-02-26 03:11:00 Susan, I think the clue is in Beetles message Feb 25 2003 1039 pm, she only keeps one file at a time on the screen, clicking the top right cross will automatically close Word.
Suggest Beetle that you whilst you are working in Word use File | open to work on other files, when work completed on each file use File | Save . You may have sevarel windows open but this is no problem .When all work complete click top right cross on each window, this should close each window with the cross on the inner (first) window automatically closing Word

123572 2003-02-26 03:14:00 Heather P I agree with you about saving frequently but if you have Word you can set it to do it automatically. mikebartnz (21)

123574 2003-02-26 03:31:00 hi beetle,
not sure what is going on but the more I read of this thread the more confused i am getting so i am actually not going to give you any advice about your 'word' problem. i appreciate that this can be confusing so i am going to suggest that you choose someone here (or someone else you know who uses windows XP and may be able to help) to give "Remote Assistance" (www.microsoft.com) a go. Some of the questions that you have are things that people pick up and learn as they go, some formally some by just using. Remote Assitance means you will still have control of your computer but you will allow someone here to work on your computer in front of you so you can learn at the same time. Also you will be able to 'chat' while they are doing it so that you can ask questions at the same time. I have used this before from both sides and find it very helpful. I am sure that someone here would be willing to assist (myself included) using remote assistance. If you use msn then it is very easy to setup.

123577 2003-02-26 03:41:00 >have Word you can set it to do it automatically.

?????

Yes it saves automatically BUT only to a temporary copy.
Shut down the program without an official save and the temp file is gone.

Far better practise is to open a new file, give it a filename and save it then save every few minutes - like at the end of each paragraph or major change.

If you rely on the temp file it may have saved 9 minutes ago just prior to some major changes when the disaster strikes.

(I know someone who typed an entire document then found there was a glitch in the saving - it wouldn't save. Disaster).

123578 2003-02-26 06:22:00 Not sure if anything I have to add will be of any use but here goes.

I use MS Works (at this point in time I do not have Word installed) I have an icon on screen for Microsoft Works. When I click on to it I open at the Works Word Processor page and I pick what I want to do. If I open a file and then close it (without changing it) I go straight back to the Works Word Processor page and can pick another file etc. I use the x in the top r/h corner
If I start a new file and I click onto the x in the top right hand corner I get asked "Do you want to save changes to untitled document" If I do I say "yes" and box opens up to type in file name etc.

Unusual for you to admit defeat SusanB so I do hope I'm not in for some worries

Hope the problem gets sorted

Iris

Reading this posting it seems there is some confusion between Works word and Word itself I got the impression from the first posting Works Word was being used.

I have Windows 98SE with Works 2000 and am just in the process of upgrading to Works Suite 2003 which has Word, and Works 7 on it
I am beginning wonder if Word is going to be a problem for me too.
