123795 2003-02-25 22:23:00 Hi there,
For a good "get into the feel" have you thought about the new MS "Digital Image Pro" which has many of the Adobe units as part of the programme, and is penuts$ as against the others.
Digital Image is very good for training to the very advanced Adobe programmes, and gives a similar "Feel"

123796 2003-02-26 00:31:00 There is a pretty good free manual online for GIMP. There are "real" books, too. Graham L (2)
123797 2003-02-26 07:37:00 Also a new digicam player, i was lucky to get Photoshop Elements with a scanner and after an intensive rummaging in the tools etc found eventually that it's BRILLIANT, not far off Photoshop 7 in fact , which is Nr 1 . Am very taken with the save to web facillity which enables one to vary infinately the file size , not to mention a host of powerfull features.

123799 2003-02-27 09:28:00 PhotoImpact 5 is now free. It can do just about everything that the megabuck PhotoShop can do (certainly for a beginner or even intermediate user).

You can get PhotoImpact 5 off an old PCW mag cover CD - a few months ago I think. Or maybe it was another mag, not sure. Probably you can download it for free - check CNET downloads or similar.

Irfanview is the best ever small fast and free photo imaging program that I have used. Cannot retouch but will do all other basics.

You can find details of all of these programs here on PF1, using the Search feature. BTW, I use all of the above programs and although Adobe PhotoShop is the one I use the most, PhotoImpact 7 (or even 5 for that matter) comes in close to it.
