123559 2003-02-25 04:02:00 Oops, your last reply was not there when I first opened this thread.

In Word or whatever the program is, can you click on 'Help' then "About.... " and tell us what it says in the dialogue box that opens? It should tell you what the program is and what version. It would help us to know that.

123560 2003-02-25 06:13:00 No objections to butting in but as Beetle I am running a PC Company Computer with XP Home Edition, it has MS Works version 6, click on MS Works Task Launcher and Word opens. Then it runs as detailed in my previous message. Perhaps I should have been a bit more specific that the white cross was on a red square background with a white border.
The main thing to help Beetle he needs to give more info about his programme as requested by Susan.

123561 2003-02-25 06:38:00 Sorry Susan B you may need to get some glasses as they are using Works.

When using an MDI program you will probably have two or more title bars and if you click the cross on the top right on the top one you will close the whole program but if you click the one below it you will only close the current document.

123563 2003-02-25 23:49:00 Well I hate admitting defeat but I am afraid that I cannot help any more as I do not have MS Works beyond Win 95 . :-(

There is definitely something wrong with your program - Works should not close down entirely when you close a document and all I can suggest is trying a reinstall of Works . If you are not sure how to do this let us know . Otherwise someone else with Works may be able to offer some other advice .

Another thought: if your computer is still under warranty it would not hurt to try contacting the PC Company and asking them about it, especially since it sounds like you have always had this problem .

123564 2003-02-26 00:46:00 I currently use Word 2000 and Excel 2000 (different programs but part of the same Microsoft family so there are similarities).

In Word there are 3 buttons in the top right hand corner - a line, a couple of overlaid boxes and a cross.

- Clicking the line minimizes the program down to the task bar (so you can see other programs that are open or the desktop)
- Clicking the boxes either maximises the program (so it fills the whole screen) or "restores" it to a smaller version so you can see other things behind it
- Clicking the cross closes the whole program

In my current version of Word there is also a cross just below the program close cross. Clicking this closes just the current document rather than the whole program.

Excel is similar but with a difference.
There are the same 3 buttons at the top for the program BUT these are DUPLICATED below it for the document (3 buttons instead of just the one).

This means the document ITSELF can be made smaller within the program whilst the program is maximised.

Earlier versions of Word seperated the program from the document in the same way Excel does.

Try this:
- Open the Word processor
- Open a document
- Maximise the program (click the middle button)

Look at the screen. There is a blue title bar at the top of the program (with the buttons on the right-hand end). Is there a blue title bar below the menu at the top of the document? If so, this will have the three buttons to the right of it. Clicking the middle button will make the document fill the entire program window.

123565 2003-02-26 01:05:00 Beetle, I think I have solved your problem. I don't think you are useing WORD. If you start it from the console you are starting MS Works word processor. Word is a seperate program and I am told the version that comes with Works is a stand alone program.
With the Works word processor it will do exactly what you are complaining about.
To use Word. navigate your way to windows explorer, then click on program files. Scroll down to microsoft office, click on the+ and then click on office. Scroll down and you will come to "Winword". Double click on that and Word should open for you.
You might want to create a shortcut to Winword on your desktop.
I have just been told that when you install Word it creates a shortcut in your start up file list. (Start/Programs)
I am told Word is on disk 1 of the works suite if you haven't installed it.
Good luck,
Jack

123566 2003-02-26 01:05:00 hi Susan, um i went and had a look at pc comp page and got lost.
this word processor is software?
because its been installed already?
came with machine.
but on pc thing says they do not resolve software problems, maybe i read it wrong?
my understanding of hardware is a piece or something eg wires circuit board or chip?
but software is programs?

to reinstall needs to uninstall first? and then reinstal with CD?
life is really meant to test us isnt it.
and the nameing of works and word is confusing what are the major differences?
can you recomend a web page of computer words in glossary form for us newbies to read and save? for future use, and enlightenmet of these strange words, all puter words are strange.

ill send pc email and see what reply i get, will let you no if like.

on pressf1 XP does not get a good rating by general feedback, on thread reading, lotsa problems.

thanxs
