123821 2003-02-25 07:33:00 I'm looking for a couple of cheap wireless lan cards, so far I have found some $87 (www.dse.co.nz) job'ies from tricky dik'ies.

Anyone know of any cheaper?

Cheers

123822 2003-02-25 07:40:00 hmm... I would suggest that you try gamma computers in auckland ;-)

123824 2003-02-25 07:46:00 What about this one for compatibility... Not just laptops (Although it would be a pain to keep in a laptop case, but fine for home use!)
Here! (www.dse.co.nz)

123825 2003-02-25 08:00:00 i'm all for loosing wires but it comes at 3 cons for 2 pros
Pro 1: server room stays clean
Pro 2: no rewiring in a building

Con 1-3: Cost, Speed and Security

PS concreat walls suck

befor doing anything i'd go look at TOMS
www.tomshardware.com
they have the best advise for anything hardware related
brands do matter, don't buy a dud

123826 2003-02-25 08:29:00 We had wireless at the college I was at last year.... most people ended up just grabbing a cat5 and using that unless they were actually walking around for the hell of it.

It's not all that fast and is rather unreliable.

Well in this case we are talking a 12 story building that isn't wired with Cat5, so wireless is the only cost-effective approach available here, I think ill grab the cards and see how they go, (they seem cheap enough).

123829 2003-02-25 09:47:00 No no, for a start I will be running an Ad-Hoc setup, with the server PC wirelessly "daisy" chaining the rest of the network with it's connection, eventually I will put in access points; but they cost $$$, which as a poor student I don't have much of.

123830 2003-02-25 09:53:00 so is this 12story building 1 company or what? and are you sending you data encriped?(because a laptop can hack in from outside the doors)
becaues my college looked at wireless and they said no because they would need encripted cards($$$$$)
