123687 2003-02-25 03:52:00 Ah yes, the old favourite! Well here's another beg for help! :_|
I have decided to do the networking thang! Got the NICs, got the cable, got the crossover adapter (that way if I get another computer later and use a hub, I know that all my cables are 'standard' CAT5 as opposed to one crossover CAT5 cable in there some where cocking things up!! ;-) ) got the network up and running. Great! :D
But wait, I hear you say. Why did I use a Win98SE machine as the access to the Internet (is that the 'Host'?) and then try to add an XP machine to it as a Client (is that the right term?). Well, because the Misses is used to the 98 machine and was not keen on change! So I reasoned that basically why shouldn't I use the computer (which ever one) that was already connected to the net, then just connect the new one to it??? Simple :) Gosh I'm clever!! :D
Of course, this is where it all collapsed! :(
So my basic question is......
do you think (after reading a lot of the huge problems people are having with ICS) that I should just 'uninstall' it as the network is running, then just download what ever to the Internet connected one, then transfer them via the internal network? Or should I go for it and keep trying the ICS (maybe uninstall it first and start from scratch, right from removing the NICs and reinstalling them)????? ?:|

Going off to get calming thoughts from stroking the pussies then on to coaching computers!!! LOL :D

Those that know me, I know you back first!?!? ;\

123688 2003-02-25 04:21:00 Did you install ICS on both machines? That won't work. Graham L (2)
123689 2003-02-25 05:43:00 You could always try reading the Microsoft ICS Setup and Troubleshooting guide? (support.microsoft.com)

I've used ICS with no problems what-so-ever except for the little incident regarding MSN and File Transfers/Voice Conversations. But apart from that ICS has worked wonders on my little home network

123690 2003-02-25 12:01:00 Bugger! Yes I did! And, as if to make things harder (I'm going to assume :( ) I did it on the XP machine first!
And to answer your next question....because I could. :p

Do you think that is the problem? I've read quite a few of the threads (I think there are somewhere around 1500 about ICS) and they all seem to have more trouble than it's worth. But hey, troubles fun, a? ;\

There's also all the hoo ha about Gateways (which, originating from the UK, reminds me of a supermarket!!) and DNS and WINS and DHCP and OBE and A+ and MCSE......lost the plot there, sorry! :8}

Contrary to popular belief, I can figure out most things, but is there just a simple way of doing it, or do I simply knuckle down?

Regards,

Another ICS challenged berk! :^O

PS Details of IP addresses, Subnet Masks (well all one of it) etc can be supplied, but I know you people can cure the dead with out raising your pulse if needed. ]:)

123691 2003-02-25 12:41:00 Thanks for the link.
Yes I have been there (only just tho') and am still plowing through the pages of info. with over a billion links per page (well, alright several :) ) to other info.

I'm fairly sure I'm getting there as the two computers 'chat' fine. Even down to using the burner (on the XP machine) to burn from a folder on the 98 SE machine. Why? Why not?? (ok and to see if it would, or just 'spit the dummy'! :D ). The 98SE machine 'talks' perfectly with the Net, and it seems protected from 'ScriptKiddies' and the like, with ZoneAlarm all set up and doing it's thang.

BUT! There's always a but, a? ;)

After further mucking around, I mean, doing some more technical work, now when I connect to the Net and enable ICS, I can get no further! "This page cannot be found..." etc. Then I disable it and everything is fine again. All the time the XP (Client) machine can still not access the net itself! Gloom and doom. :_|

Hope this isn't becoming a rerun of one of the other 1500 threads on here? I can't read them all today!! :)

Regards again,

:D

123692 2003-02-25 19:57:00 Well I got my network going and if I can do it so can anyone else! :p

If you want to save yourself some stress and hair, why not have the Win XP as the Host PC (ie the one connected to the internet)? You cannot have ICS running on both machines and from what I have read Win XP seems to be geared up to handle being the Host much better than Win 98SE. If you make the Win XP the Host what will change for your "missus"? All you need to do is plug the Win XP comp into the modem instead of the Win 98 and she can still use the computer she is familiar with.

My two are running Win XP (the host) and Win 98 1st ed (client) and if you want to read the novel detailing the drama I had setting it all up you can find it here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) <checks link carefully for .doubleclick ads>.

I must be missing something here because I still cannot really figure out what your problem is.

123693 2003-02-25 21:03:00 Try specifying the DNS server as 192.168.0.1 on the client PC (Which is your XP PC)! Chilling_Silence (9)
123694 2003-02-26 11:11:00 Ta very muchly Susan.
I actually have read the 84 replies, re-replies and re-re-replies in your thread and got so lost I thought I'd print it out and read it in a darkened room! :D
It was over 14 pages of A4 in landscape (as the thread had gone wider than my browser window), and I think I may have to pay you a few coppers for the copyright when I publish it in a few months!! :^O

But seriously, I would like to know why I can't just connect the new computer (XP Client) to the old computer (98 SE Host) and 'jiggle' a few settings? Surely networks were around before XP? And besides, you haven't met my Misses!!! ;\ :x
"Keep the peace!" is my motto (or duck as the sh*t comes your way!).

Again, as I said before, any settings required I shall gladly supply (if they're hard to get to a brief map would help please :8} ) as I'm still quite interested to see if I (ok, you guys :) can get these two doing 'the dance of the single line'.

Regards once more, :D

123695 2003-02-26 11:16:00 Will try that and get back to... er... here!
Thanks.

123696 2003-02-26 11:19:00 Oh, BTW, how do you 'turn off' ICS in Windows XP? I Can't seem to find an 'off' switch! ?:|
