124247 2003-02-26 22:47:00 Help! I can't open my .bmp files any more unless I open them through paintbrush. I am running windows 98SE on a Hewlett Packard at 233MHz with 3.2Gb HDD and 256Mb of RAM. Up until I did something dopey I could open .bmp files where-ever I had them stored and they opened OK.

I recently bought my first scanner and loaded in the software from the CD that came with it, but I kept on loading and also installed Ulead Photo Explorer v7.0, and I think I inadvertently told it to associate all sorts of graphics files with itself, and that was the bad thing I did. All my normal Paint icons on my .bmp files everywhere turned into Ulead icons. When I decided I didn't need Ulead Photo Explorer I removed the program successfully, but now my .bmp files have a little windows flag icon, not the Paint icon, and they refuse to open from where they are stored on my computer.

Can I make them open from where they are again and avoid the tedium of having to access them through the windows Paint program?

124248 2003-02-26 22:54:00 have a look at FAQ#13
How do I change the program which opens a certain type of file?

FROM THE FAQ:
The reasons for changing the association for a specific file-type vary, but it is usually because a hostile program has taken over the task of opening a particular file-type, or you just prefer to use a different program than the Windows default.

124250 2003-02-28 06:59:00 Oops. Didn't realize it but my .jpg files still don't look right. They are now associated with MSPaint and open looking very garish, not looking good like they used to. I can't find the little .jpg icon in my list of programs to "open with" and all my .jpg files used to have this icon which from memory is a paintbrush diagonally across a little picture frame, something like that. How do I find this so I can associate it with my .jpg files? StanHood (3253)
124251 2003-03-01 00:11:00 Hi Stan

Bitmap files can only be associated with Windows Paint, they will preview but not open in Internet Explorer.

I suggest you check again to make sure your jpg's are associated with iexplore.exe (Internet explorer) then redo your bitmaps as well to associate with Mspaint.

I also recommend that you check in Folder Options/View to make sure that you have only one entry each for jpg & bmp files. However, if you use a lot of jpegs, it can pay to install two associations, one for jpg and the other for jpeg so that misnamed files will open too.

On my system, Quicktime hijacked gif, jpg & bmp files but left corrupted associations present in Folder Options. I had to deleted every instance of jpeg & bmp and start again. Of course it only takes a couple of minutes to do this so it was no hardship, but I had spent some time and invented a few new words before I twigged to what was going on.

Cheers
