123959 2003-02-26 01:30:00 Afternoon all.
My sons PC has a Maxtor 40 gig 7200 rpm drive that is showing bad clusters.
We are running Win 98 se in a resonably new machine which is a Athlon 1400.
The Hard drive itself is less than a year old.
We have it set to DMA but not sure if that sould make any difference to it.
Any thoughts as to what i should do apart from sending it back to the retailer we bought it off?
Cheers

123960 2003-02-26 02:10:00 Take it back to the supplier, its not worth the risk. Major data loss could be imminent. Having saaid that, are you geting bad cluster warnings spontaneously or are you running scandisk?

A HD that new shouldn't be showing bad clusters. I've got five year old disks that have been in use daily all that time and scandisk has never identified a singlr bad cluster.

Cheers

123961 2003-02-26 02:41:00 Thanks
Yeah i think you are right
i can't understand it at all either
what is happening is that the scan disk is running at start up and finding these bad clusters
He started a surface scan this morning before he went to school and it's still finding them
i can't see that i have done anything wrong in the setup as it's pretty idiot proof .
anyway
thanks for your thoughts

123962 2003-02-26 03:29:00 Yeah, if its less than a year, take it back ASAP.

I would enable SMART in the BIOS with your next HDD. Its supposed to warn you about HDD failure I believe (Still new to that technology myself).

If its coming up with bad clusters, then you're gonna wanna replace a HDD asap, and it should be under a warranty, even though new HDD's warranty's have been downed to 1 yer instead of the usual 3.

123964 2003-02-26 23:43:00 Warren - keep us posted about how you get on, I have a Maxtor 60Gb HDD away to the manufacturer's rep at the moment. It failed about 2 weeks ago, and when I took it to be 'sorted out', I was told it had lots of bad sectors. I only purchased it at New Year. It was the second one I got, and the first one couldn't be 'found'. I am currently feeling a little nervous about Maxtor HDDs. R.M. (561)
123965 2003-02-27 02:22:00 Hi Warren

Do you realise that you do not have to wait while faulty products go to the "manufacturers' Rep"? Responsibility for honouring the warranty and replacing/refunding lies squarely with the Vendor.

You should expect the warranty to be honoured as soon as the defect is verified, allowing that the vendor can obtain a suitable/acceptable HDD within a reasonable time frame. Two to three days is enough for standard computer components and after that you can ask for a refund so that you can make your own arrangements.

Don't be bluffed or put off by any "we have to wait and see what the manufacturer says" blarny, the Consumer Guarantees Act is quite specific on this and the HDD is fundamental to the operation of your computer so the whole deal comes under threat if they do not act promptly.

123966 2003-02-27 02:36:00 R.M. I think you'll find that they are all "very good" because of the modern manufacturing methods. Unfortunately, because of the modern manufacturing methods, if you get one bad one, a replacement might have the same fault, because it was produced in the same batch, with components from the same batches. :D Graham L (2)
123967 2003-02-27 05:50:00 Hi Guys
i went to the retailer this morning and they swapped it for a Seagate Barracuda 40 gig ....no questions asked
got the PC up and running now and is real sweet
The only thing that peed me off was that the young fella had a lot of stuff on there that he had down loaded and had not burnt on to CD
He will learn some day .
Anyway the retailer involved is in Te Awamutu and i have nothing but praise for them .
Are the Maxtor drives having a bad run ?
Thanks for everything
