2003-02-25 21:12:00 | My current Network setup isnt really working too welll.... Ive got 4 PC's in my bedroom, only the Gateway PC is in the family room. The current Gateway is running ICS on the fixed IP 192.168.0.1 Now, when the parents shut down the PC at night, it sends my network in the bedroom up the creek. Basically, I want a gateway/DHCP sever running in my bedroom (Ive got a PC that's always on), but I still wanna be able to connect to the web through the family PC which will no longer be the DHCP server, although 3 of the 5 PC's on the network have a static IP now I think. Basically... I dont want all the PC's to have to connect to the ICS server to be available on the network, as currently they have to. BUT, I still want them to all be able to connect via ICS! How would this work? Do I simplly give all the PC's a static IP (which Im kinda hoping to do soon anyways), and specify the gateway as 192.168.0.2 (The IP of the PC I keep always on) and then give them 192.168.0.1 as the DNS server? Have I just answered my own question? I thought I'd ask before I tried re-modelling my network. Thanks guys Chilling_Silence

2003-02-26 02:13:00 | XP Pro, 2K, 98, RedHat 8. I was hoping they'd simply use the one PC that's always on, 192.168.0.2... If I reset all the other PC's, will they choose 192.168.0.2 as the browse master? What about if 192.168.0.1 is off?

2003-02-26 05:17:00 | So you're gonna have something like this: Internet <<-- Parents machine (ICS) <<-- gateway (your room only) <<-- your other PCs.

2003-02-26 08:36:00 | Yup, thats right... Only thing is.. the ICS PC wont be on all the time (I know I cant be online when its not.... thats fine), but they dont seem to be picking each other up all the time at the moment :-) | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2003-02-26 08:58:00 | Personally I'd just use fixed IPs or have another box doing the DHCP if thats possible. | -=JM=- (16) | |
2003-02-26 09:04:00 | chill...what are you trying to do ??? the ICS pc is the internet gateway. it won't effect windows filesharing. as suggest i would stick to fixed ip addy. | tweak'e (174) | |
2003-02-26 20:44:00 | Well.. Ive hooked up allmy PC's withStatic IP's. my LAN wouldnt work when the ICS box got turned off, or so I thought. It appeared that the Static IP box couldnt talk to the PC's with DHCP'd IPs for some reason when the ICS server was off. Switched all over to Static's and Im peachy. Seems a bit weird it didnt fix my static IP PC with XP Pro as Browse Master?
