123881 2003-02-25 19:54:00 I'm after 10 or 20 (legit!) copies of windows 98se....just had a quick look on trademe.co.nz - single copies are selling (!) for around $100.

Is it just me or does anyone else think this is just too much for a 5 year old operating system?

I would have thought that the value for a single copy would be around the $30 mark.

123882 2003-02-25 20:20:00 Well.. Brand new, both 98 and XP are $395! Chilling_Silence (9)
123883 2003-02-25 21:00:00 Just a question of supply and demand, you've really answered your own question :) :)
There is a great demand for Win98SE from those buying and selling 2nd hand computers.
Last time I checked with MS they said they are not selling Win98SE anymore, or the SE upgrade disk.

123884 2003-02-25 21:41:00 Your best bet would probably be to lookinto a corporate liscence for Win2K/XP, sorry, but I dont have pricing for it. Chilling_Silence (9)
123885 2003-02-25 22:43:00 well i local net cafe just bought 20 or so. they said it was very hard to find so many copies. win98se is still sort after. 2nd hand copies still fetch a good price, if you can find one.

if there is a budget constaint why not use a free OS?

123886 2003-02-26 02:17:00 Depending on what you're after, WineX (will post software review tonight) and RedHat could suffice for some people. What are you wanting it for and what machines aer you going to be running them on (Spec wise.. An old P133 or the latest hyperthreading P4?) Chilling_Silence (9)
123887 2003-02-26 04:57:00 Thanks for all the comments guys.

Machines will be on sold at less than $500 to individual users who would have had some (brief) PC training to enable them to continue learning.
have already checked out and installed open office (bloody brilliant! for free!) and was looking at linux, but some may want to run the odd win game so this may throw a damper on that one. Still keen on red hat or something similar tho.
I know this has been asked a million times, but if you wanted someone to learn linux that was near identical to win XP (for example) which distribution to go for? Line of thinking here is that the users upskill themselves on these 2nd hand machines and then go on to an office job where more than likely Windoze would be being used...
