124098 2003-03-03 02:36:00 If it is large with one or two fat wires out the top it is the EHT transformer . If it is small and round it is probably an inductor of some description . There are not many components capable of emitting audible noise and it is usually those with magneto-restrictive properties that can tick, whistle or sing .

Under severe overload, resistors usuall go fizz-crack very briefly and emit smoke, then they lie there and sulk . Capacitors can fizz a bit then go bang and distribute their internals around the inside of the case .

If it is the EHT transformer and it is ticking, there is a fair chance that the CRT has lost its vacuum, probably by cracking the end of the neck . If you pull the CRT base off you may see the damage .

124099 2003-03-03 03:08:00 It might be a piezo sounder. That's one part which would be on an electric fence unit. Unusual to have one in a monitor, though. :D Graham L (2)
124100 2003-03-03 03:56:00 I'm starting to get worried on this thread .
The one thing that is obvious it that this is well beyond what any unexperianced person should be doing .

My advice is to put the lid back on and except the loss .

In case no-one got the moral of the story i told above, heres clue #2:

The guy did not live to admit that he had wired the red wire to one chassis by mistake . Upon grabbing both units he completed a 230v circuit . His hand muscles contracted and he was never able to let go . His flatmates eventually smelt him cooking . That is how he was found .
Once the power was switched off, he was able to be seperated from his work, but his body was stiff and could only be removed from the attick by the removal of the roofing iron and the use of a crane .

If you can't identify the "round thing" you shouldn't be doing this! Please just put the cover back and dump the thing!

124101 2003-03-03 05:33:00 Sounds like what you describe is the EHT Txmr ( aka LOPTY) . The only thing you can do is carefully examine the circuit board tracks around it for cracks. It is usually around the lopty that cracks due to its weight. After that. TAKE THE ADVICE. Put it back together and give it to a serviceman to fix or dump it! Pheonix (280)
124102 2003-03-03 05:54:00 I don't think you need to worry quite that much Clueless. Nigel has made very clear his respect for electricity, to the point that he will not even risk a minor shock from residual charges.

In addition, good advice has been offered as to safe handling of the equipment and no suggestion has been made that he apply power to the monitor while the back is off. This is all visual stuff carried out on an electrically "dead" lump of plastic and glass.

The greatest risk Nigel faces is that he might drop it the darned thing on his foot. :^O

No matter how many shocks you get, you will not reach your full potential.
