2003-02-27 22:18:00 | Two things Nigel, 1: Are you absolutely sure the Ping is coming out of the speakers? (Im thinking of a situation where the speakers are attached to the side of the Monitor.) 2: Did your visual inspection of the CRT reveal any white cloud, or white smoke around the neck or indeed any transparent part of the picture tube? (Internally that is) :(

2003-02-27 23:35:00 | The white appearance indicates air entry to the CRT. That used to give an instant diagnosis for valve radios. :D It's usually a slow leak that does that. The fast vacuum loss of a CRT with a broken neck gave a good indication on a B&W tube: there was a "sandblasted area in the middle of the screen, where the phosphor had been abraded by the glass fragments and other bits in the high velocity air flow. I suppose the shadow mask would stop that in a colour tube. A pinging noise? Not a "snapping" noise? But I'd look for a second-hand working monitor, unless there is something obviously "wrong" which is easily fixed. They're cheap enough to make "professional" repairs uneconomic.

2003-02-28 03:22:00 | Hiya Billy, :-) I think it would be worth putting this info in one of your monitor FAQs - do you agree? I know you touched on some safety issues but this is quite a bit more comprehensive. What do you think? BTW Congratulations on reaching your first ton! Well done! :D

2003-02-28 03:37:00 | Billy: 200 microfarads with 320V DC comes to about 10 joules . That's a signficant amount of energy . The 200 mic figure applies to most computer PSUs . . . monitor switchmode supplies wouldn't use much less, would they? ½CV^2 . . . "The volts just jolts, it's mils that kills" . ;-)

2003-02-28 03:54:00 | Hi Susan Yes, I will put it in the monitor FAQs, I have a few bits and pieces to add so now is a good time . The first 1000 ?:| It just snuck up on me when I wasn't looking . :O Might even hit the magical 1024 this weekend if I'm lucky:D Cheers Billy 8-{) :D

2003-02-28 07:14:00 | I can't see any sign of damage to the CRT and I am fairly sure the pinging is coming from the speakers (although I will double check this ) Call me a hoarder but i hate to throw away stuff that may be useful or fixable, and it has been a really good reliable monitor. Congrats to Billy T on the 1000 posts (I thought it was an achievement reaching 70 posts!!) Oh well I will have one last check of my monitor, and then it will have to go to the great computer in the sky. Is it just me or does anyone else feel a sense of loss when a faithful bit of computer equipment that you've relied on finally bites the dust. oh well thanks everyone

2003-02-28 08:46:00 | Hi Nigel, There is a second-hand computer recycler in the old Roslyn Mill, K'Valley Road Dunedin. He sells monitors really cheap, and the courier from Dunedin to Invergiggle wouldn't be any more than 10 bucks. They usually are open in the weekend only

2003-02-28 13:29:00 | Go to this web site of . vacuumtube . com/capacito . htm" target="_blank">www . vacuumtube . com have way down the page is a picture of three blue "Electrolytic Capacitors " and a silver one . Your one might be black instead of blue or silver, these are one of the main things that could give you a shock while the monitor is turned off and not power by mains, the diameter of them might be the same as a 20 or 50 cent piece . The other one main one is the lead going to the top of the picture tube . Do not power on if the back is off, and do not touch any bare electrical conductors . if you don't no what you are doing, and don't take the the back off in the firs place . ======= part two, for what it is worth? =========== here are some other URL I went to google and typed in =>capacitors hold there charge and got, High voltage Capacitors made from Polystyrene drinking Cups . . fortunecity . com/greenfield/bp/16/foamcup . htm" target="_blank">www . fortunecity . com Then I used => why do capacitors hold there charge and got Testing a Triac . uoguelph . ca/~antoon/gadgets/triactst . htm" target="_blank">www . uoguelph . ca darts that is no good at all for you . A better one, (could be worse) Capacitors . igpp . ucla . edu/hemisphere/Discussion2/Capacitor . htm" target="_blank">measure . igpp . ucla . edu oh how about RIDICULOUSLY SENSITIVE CHARGE DETECTOR . amasci . com/emotor/chargdet . html" target="_blank">www . amasci . com ======== part three, ================ Chaos is found in the greatest abundance wherever order is being sought, it always defeats order because it is better organized .
